Congratulations August Employee of the Month: Lisa Brown

Lisa Brown performs a wide range of roles in managing the facilities, assisting new and enrolled students, and providing clerical and administrative support to CCCC's Barbering program at West Harnett Center. Her responsibilities transcend the typical building administrative assistant role. She manages product inventory, helps new students with the admissions and background check requirements, interacts with salon patrons, assists faculty in record keeping, and keeps the program chair and provost aware of facilities needs...often all in the same day!

Lisa goes far above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that CCCC Barbering students achieve their academic goals, earn their licenses, and enter the workforce better prepared to succeed.

Thank you for the nomination. I consider it quite an honor and am overwhelmed I would be considered and pleasantly surprised I was chosen.

It will be four years this fall that I have been with CCCC. I had been coming to CCCC for Barbering services for several years before I was approached to consider a position within the Barbering Department as an office assistant.

I started out assisting with the student files, preparing needed paperwork for them along with the other instructors located at WHC. I would answer the phone and greet the public upon visiting our campus. Over the years at WHC there have been many changes and with those changes the needs of WHC have changed. I have embraced them and continue to build and improve on the internal customer as well as the external customer.

Customer service is very important to me, and I come from a previous position of managing domestic and international customer service departments and marketing for a privately owned medical manufacturer. I look forward to seeing the people I work with and the students I help. We all enjoy what we do and have become more than a team. We consider ourselves family.

I was born at Dover General Hospital in Dover, NJ. Even though I spent most of my years in NJ, I have lived all over, including Belgium for four years.

I moved here from WA and now reside in Sanford with my husband and three boys, four-legged boys, Misha, Moonlight, and Memphis. Mark, my husband, was stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA, when we married and after 911 we decided we needed to be closer to family. Ft. Bragg seemed logical being halfway between NJ and FL, two states with family.

Mark has been retired from the Army for several years now but continues to work for the Army as a civilian. He is also a volunteer and paid part-time fireman with Spout Springs Fire Dept.

I serve as a board of director member for Spout Springs Fire Dept. I enjoy helping with fund raisers for the fire department and also helping with the Army in any way I can. I enjoy working outside, tinkering in my garden and enjoying the beauties of nature.

TRiO Programs Awarded $2.2M in Student Support Services Grants

by Ashley Tittemore, Director of TRiO Programs Upward Bound Math and Science & Veterans Upward Bound

TRiO Programs at CCCC is pleased to announce the receipt of two additional grant awards which the college applied for in February: Student Support Services and Student Support Services - STEM & Health Sciences.

The programs will both start on Sept. 1 and together will serve at least 260 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities at CCCC each year by providing opportunities for academic development, assisting students with basic college requirements, and motivating students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The programs will also provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention, graduation, and university transfer rates of its participants. Each program will operate on nearly $220,000 annually, for a total amount of $2,195,350 in new funding over the next five years.

We hope that our faculty and staff will assist us sharing information about this program with their students in all three counties and encouraging them to enroll throughout the fall semester. Special thanks to all those who were involved in the development, writing, and submission of the grants, and thank you all for your support of our TRiO Programs and students!

The Women's Exchange

Join in on Oct. 8 for The Women’s Exchange at the Dennis Wicker Civic Center. Presented by the Sanford Business & Professional Women’s Club and geared toward career women, this half-day symposium will include professional development speakers, networking opportunities, a women in business panel discussion and a lunch with keynote address by Anita Brown-Graham, Director of the Institute for Emerging Issues at NC State University.

The Business and Professional Women (BPW) organization is the oldest of its kind in the world. It is devoted entirely and actively to the interests and needs of all employed women irrespective of their occupation and of their status.

The first 50 registrants will receive a free Swag Bag the day of the event!

Veteran's Upward Bound Bids Farewell to Dr. Immormino

TRiO Programs and Veterans Upward Bound bid farewell to Dr. Bob Immormino, NCVetsCorps member at CCCC since January 2014. Bob completed his two years of service with NCVetsCorps, an AmeriCorps program, on August 11. During his time at the college, Bob contributed significantly to the student veterans at CCCC, as well as many other veterans and their families in the local area. He assisted in providing services to Veterans Upward Bound participants, tutored in Science and Math extensively, and also volunteered with Communities in Schools of Lee County's BackPack Pals program and Fayetteville Urban Ministry on a regular basis.

News from Upward Bound Math and Science

2015 Summer Banquet Celebration

On Aug. 4, Upward Bound Math and Science celebrated the many accomplishments of their young scholars at the 2015 Summer Banquet Celebration. Thirty-four newly enrolled eighth and ninth graders were officially inducted into the program. Rising high school juniors were recognized for their completion of 2015 Summer Academy. Rising seniors were acknowledged for fulfilling their Summer Internship requirements. Eleven of the twenty-eight seniors received recognition for completing the Summer Bridge program.

South Carolina Trip

Upward Bound Math and Science rising juniors and rising seniors took a memorable enrichment trip to South Carolina to celebrate a year of personal and educational growth and success. Students enjoyed personifying the meaning of Upward Bound Math and Science mission as they paid a visit to the University of South Carolina-Columbia, The Citadel-The Military College of South Carolina, Boone Hall Plantation, and the South Carolina Aquarium.

New Student Orientation Success

The College Success Center is happy to announce that more than 450 students were served during New Student Orientation (NSO) over the summer.

The College Success Center hosted eight NSOs over the past three months. NSO serves as a student's first introduction to the CCCC community after the admissions process. NSO helped students to learn more about CCCC, their academic program, and helped students to begin developing positive relationships with CCCC faculty, staff, and fellow students. It also provided an opportunity for students to learn more about the placement test, register for Fall courses, learn more about financial aid, and complete any necessary paperwork prior to starting the Fall semester.

The College Success Center would like to thank all faculty, staff and students who helped to make NSO a huge success. We could not have done it without you.

We would love to cover any of the following:

• Mock trials
• Special speakers/presentations
• Students presentations
• Dramatic performances
• Interesting lectures
• Poetry readings

Basically, anything that you feel could run on the TV station! The more local content we have the better. Keep in mind we air in 17 counties in North Carolina, and featuring your event could bring new students. Requesting coverage does not guarantee coverage, but we will do our best to make it to as many events as possible. If we do film an event for you, the show can be made "on demand" for you to show when needed in future classes.

We will also begin airing Cougar basketball games this fall. Have a great semester everyone!

News From The Library

Library Receives Grant for Harnett

The library has been awarded another LSTA Literacy and Lifelong Learning Grant this year in the amount of $49,544 that will focus on increasing access to technology and library information resources for Harnett students.

With the grant funds, room 305 in the Etheridge building, which is connected to the library, will be converted into a library instruction computer lab with 20 student computers. During times that library classes are not being taught, the lab will serve as an open computer lab for students. This increases the Harnett Library's computer capacity from 10 to 30 computers total. The lab will also have printing services with both a regular and a color printer.

In addition, the second floor study suite (room 207) at the Harnett Health Sciences Center will have six open access student computers and a printer added. The new computers and printer will provide health sciences students with access to MS Office software, library online resources, and printing services, which was a critical need we identified in our LSTA Planning Grant last year. Renovations for these projects will begin during the fall semester with plans to open the new lab and study suite before the end of the semester.

LSTA grant funds awarded by the State Library of North Carolina are made possible through funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), and are administered by the State Library, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.

Library Staff Changes

The library bids farewell to Amy Gustavson as she transitions into her new position with the Institutional Effectiveness department. During her two years at the library, Amy has provided excellent library instruction and reference services, managed our online research guides, implemented our new Summon Search tool, led the efforts in redesigning our new web page, and made many other contributions toward promoting and improving access to library services and resources for our students. We wish her much success in her new endeavor!

Bereavements

Our hearts go out to Thurlia Martin, ECD Testing Coordinator, who lost her mother, Bernice Martin. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 21, at 1 p.m., at Mount Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, Carthage. Burial will follow in the Stone’s Chapel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the church.

We regretfully announce the passing of Gail Smith Bridges, wife of former Trustee Tommy Bridges, and aunt of Abby Walker on Thursday, August 13. Correspondence may be sent to Abby at 4260 Deep River Road, Sanford, NC 27330.

We regretfully announce the passing of Lloyd Reid Johnson, father-in-law of Denise Johnson, on Saturday, August 1. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Neill’s Creek Baptist Church, 4200 Neill’s Creek Road, Angier, NC 27501.

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Paul George Neal, father of Mike Neal, who passed away on July 28. Visitation and Service took place at Jonesboro United Methodist Church.
