Congratulations July Employee of the Month: Christa Mashburn

Christa Mashburn is always staying on the cutting edge of product knowledge and bringing the Cougar Print Shop's capabilities to above average standards. She goes the extra mile to obtain new equipment and procedures for her department and team. Her department always goes above and beyond to accomplish deadlines from other departments. Her department will stay late to print graduation programs, drop off mail after the mail has already been delivered for the day and use their own decorations to make an event look good. They participate in most every aspect of the college and continuously seek improvements and strive for excellence.

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?

A.   I have been a part of the CCCC family for 10 years.

Q.   What brought you to CCCC?

A.   The desire to work in a family orientated job setting.

Q.   Describe what you do for the College.

A.   As the Coordinator for Business Services I oversee the mail room, courier, copy machines, and vending services. Business Services has an impact on every employee within the college, and we do so with a small staff. With four full-time employees and two part-time couriers, we continuously stay busy with various jobs requests. I am lucky to have such a great team!

A.   Broadway

A.   Associates in Applied Science with concentration in Business Administration

Q.   Where do you live now?

A.   Broadway

Q.   Tell us about your family (relatives, spouse, children, grandchildren, etc.).

A.   I have been married for 12 years and have three awesome boys. Their ages are 8, 6, and 3. My stepdad also works for the college-Ronnie Measamer (Physical Plant Director).

Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?

A.   We stay really busy with sports and we enjoy camping as a family.

Q.   Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?

A.   I am honored and surprised to be chosen as July's employee of the month.

TRiO Programs Awarded $2.2M in Student Support Services Grants

by Ashley Tittemore, Director of TRiO Programs Upward Bound Math and Science & Veterans Upward Bound

TRiO Programs at CCCC is pleased to announce the receipt of two additional grant awards which the college applied for in February: Student Support Services and Student Support Services - STEM & Health Sciences.

The programs will both start on Sept. 1 and together will serve at least 260 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities at CCCC each year by providing opportunities for academic development, assisting students with basic college requirements, and motivating students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The programs will also provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention, graduation, and university transfer rates of its participants. Each program will operate on nearly $220,000 annually, for a total amount of $2,195,350 in new funding over the next five years.

We hope that our faculty and staff will assist us sharing information about this program with their students in all three counties and encouraging them to enroll throughout the fall semester. Special thanks to all those who were involved in the development, writing, and submission of the grants, and thank you all for your support of our TRiO Programs and students!

New York Celebration

In light of celebrating our inaugural Upward Bound Math and Science graduating high school class, the soon-to-be college freshmen were awarded with a cultural enrichment trip to New York City, New York.

On July 10, Summer Bridge participants boarded the northbound train to New York City where a visit to Central Park, Broadway, and Times Square awaited them. Students enjoyed exploring various city sites while cruising on ferry as well as touring the Empire State Building. Mirroring the constant change of one of the world's most powerful cities, students are looking forward to embracing a new college scenery and someday making personal trips back to the city that never sleeps.

President for the Sandhills Dental Assistants Society

Vicky Wesner, Dental Programs Director, was recently elected to serve as president for the Sandhills Dental Assistants Society. She will serve as president for a one-year term. In her role, she will secure speakers to provide continuing education to dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dentists from Lee, Moore, Harnett, and surrounding counties. CCCC will host the continuing education courses in spring, 2016. ‪CCCC will host the annual North Carolina Dental Assistants Association meeting on Aug. 14.‬

Sanford Business & Professional Women

Four members of the Sanford Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW) were appointed to the 2015-2016 BPW-NC Board of Directors, including Kelly Hazen Klug of Lighthouse Documentation and Training and Central Carolina Community College. Kelly was named Twitter Chair.

Sanford BPW President Danielle Spivey of Static Control is proud to see the local club flourishing, “Having four of our members appointed to the state board is an indication of the great strides we’ve made over the past few years, especially in the areas of membership and social media. We’re thrilled to be growing and to have strong club representation at the state level.”

The Sanford BPW Club, founded in 1945, is focused on helping women grow professionally, personally and politically. The club currently has 43 members and meets monthly on the first Thursday, except in July. In additional to the monthly meetings, Sanford BPW also hosts The Women’s Exchange, an annual women’s conference held in October.

21st Annual Medical Assisting Pinning Ceremony

July 28 is the date for the 21st annual Medical Assisting Pinning ceremony. It is a very intimate ceremony that includes awards presentations and a slide show for the families to see what the students have been doing over the last year. We have 26 students graduating, fourteen from the Harnett campus and 12 from the Chatham campus. The students complete a rigorous three-semester program that includes a 200-hour clinical rotation in a medical practice.

Whitney Simonian, Dental Programs Instructor, was recently published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene. Her research focused on the clinical self-confidence of senior dental hygiene students after completing a three-week practicum experience.

STEM Workshops a Blast!

Our Upward Bound Math and Science students had a blast with their STEM workshops this summer instructed by faculty members from Central Carolina Community College.

We would like to thank Sandra Castonguay for instructing a robotics workshop in which students built their own remote control car from the very bottom up; Walter Choi for instructing the computer programming workshop where students enjoyed learning about new possible apps for their cellphone; Gary Blankenship for the criminal justice workshop in which students collected fingerprints on different objects; Andrew McMahan for the sustainability workshop from which the students got to bring home their own biofuel; Gary Beasley for instructing a laser and photonics workshop where the students enjoyed making their own laser nametag; and Kimberly Browning, Vicky Wesner, Anne Davis-Johnson, and Barbara Campbell for giving our students an opportunity to learn about many health careers.

We appreciate all the faculty members for giving up some of their time this summer to spend it with our students teaching them about their field. Thanks for a great experience!

SACSCOC Tips of the Month!

Curriculum By Committee, Speak Volumes!

CCCC has some of the finest faculty in the entire community college system. Our students benefit from their expertise and CCCC's commitment to student learning. As great as they are, however, the curriculum they teach must be guided and developed to ensure appropriateness and quality.

Comprehensive Standard 3.4.11 states for each major in a degree program, the institution assigns responsibility for program coordination, as well as for curriculum development and review, to persons academically qualified in the field. In those degree programs for which the institution does not identify a major, this requirement applies to a curricular area or concentration.

This standard assumes that individuals competent in the field oversee each major or curricular area or area of concentration in undergraduate and graduate degree programs in order to assure that each contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains currency in the degree.

Degree programs normally are coordinated by academically qualified faculty who hold degree credentials or other qualifications appropriate to the degree offered. In our case, CCCC's Deans and Curriculum Committee comprised of qualified faculty, staff, and administration does an excellent job to meet this standard and ensures our students always receive the very best!

It is with sadness we announce the passing of R.V. Hight's Mother-in-law, Mary Doris Apple, on July 1.

Our hearts go out to Crystal McIver who lost her mother, Mabel Marie Boyd, on June 26. The funeral service was held on July 1 at Fair Promise Church, 712 Wall Street, Sanford.

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Samantha O'Connor's mother-in-law, Paula O'Connor, on June 12. A funeral service was held on June 18 in Chicago, IL. Cards and expressions of sympathy may be sent to the O'Connor family at James and Samantha O'Connor, 404 Kinship Lane, Apex, NC 27502.
