ACCELERATE Program is a Good Choice for Motivated Students
We are excited to announce the launch of a new program for transfer students at CCCC beginning fall 2015. Through our ACCELERATE program, students will have the opportunity to earn the Associate in Arts (Transfer) degree in only one year.
This cohort-based program will be located on our Pittsboro campus and offer students an alternative pathway to a two-year degree while fostering a sense of community and network of resources that will help them meet their academic goals. This is a selective program and we anticipate that 15 students will be selected for the first year. If you have questions, Mr. Robert Barnes will serve as the program coordinator and can be reached at (919) 545-8075, or by email at rbarnes@cccc.edu.
If you know students that might be interested, please have them visit and apply on the Central Carolina Works Accelerate website.
ECD Holiday Contribution
Although Christmas may only be a fond memory now, we wouldn't want to overlook ECD's contribution to national ugly Christmas sweater day!
BackPack Pals
Students from Central Carolina Community College's ACA classes recently volunteered with BackPack Pals, a service operated by Communities In Schools of Lee County. The volunteers placed food in bags for children who otherwise would have little or no food to eat for the weekend.
Cougar Basketball Schedule and Broadcasts
Cougar basketball is broadcast on WDCC. All HOME games are on WDCC 90.5 FM this season.

FREE: Give Kids A Smile Event
Faculty and Staff: Please share with your students or anyone that would benefit from the Give Kids A Smile event. This event serves local children and brings national attention from the American Dental Association as they hope to use our event as a benchmark for future national events.
CCCC Dental and Medical Assisting Programs are partnering with Dr. Raymond J. Tseng, DDS, PhD, Southern Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, Chair, Children's Dental Health Programs, NC Dental Society and Adj. Asst Professor, Pediatric Dentistry, as well as UNC Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, NC State University, Methodist University and UNC Chapel Hill.
This Lee, Harnett, and Chatham County Give Kids A Smile event will provide FREE dental and health services for uninsured children ages 1-13 years old. Harnett and Lee county dentists, pediatric dentists, registered dental hygienists, and students will offer:
- Dental Checkups
- Cleanings
- Sealants
- Fluoride Treatments
- Medical Screenings
- Nutrition and Oral Hygiene
- Educational programs, games, prizes, lunch and fun for parents and children!
New for 2015 - For children with cavities or treatment needs, local Lee and Harnett County dentists and pediatric dentists will be available to help arrange times to complete dental treatment at low or no cost. Children MUST participate in this event to be eligible.

Silent Auction Success
The CCCC Unit of North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals would like to thank everyone for helping make our Silent Auction a success this year. Total amount collected to use for student scholarships: $ 1,661.91. Thank You!
NC-NET Academy Course
Open enrollment for the NC-NET Academy's course for the spring semester, Technology Bootcamp: Incorporating the Latest Tools for Effective Instruction is underway. This six-week online, facilitator-led course is designed for all faculty and will be delivered January 30 - March 13.

The Best of the Best
Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) Ernest A. McIntyre Jr. sent his many thanks to Dwight Dixon, Director of Emergency Services Training Center, for providing continuous support to the Tri-Meet. Mr. Dixon and his staff are excellent role models for our future leaders.
Colonel McIntyre added, "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting our Tri-Meet on Saturday, 18 October 2014. The entire day was truly enjoyable. I appreciate the time, effort and skills of the Officers, Noncommissioned Officers, and Senior ROTC Cadets."

Academic Success

Clay Pigeon Shooting Tournament
Dr. Pamela Senegal, Jamie Wicker, Emily Hare, and Catherine Hendricks fielded the first all-female team at the Sanford Chamber of Commerce's Clay Pigeon Shooting Tournament. The four women represented CCCC with pride!
Employee of the Month Program
Please join me as we begin recognizing our full-time faculty and staff for their exceptional contributions and customer service. The purpose of this award is to:
- Promote positive employee-to-employee and employee-to-student interactions on campus in order to further a learning first culture
- Increase employee engagement through recognizing positive employee behaviors
The Employee Recognition Committee is currently accepting nominations. All nominations are due by the first Monday of the calendar month (February 2nd) to be recognized the following month.

News From The Library
New Librarian at Harnett Campus
The CCCC Library welcomes Jennifer Seagraves as our new full-time Instruction and Outreach Librarian at the Harnett Campus. Jennifer comes to us from High Point University where she was the Learning Commons Librarian for two years. Jennifer has a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Virginia and a Master's degree in Information and Library Science from UNC-Chapel Hill. Jennifer will be responsible for providing library instruction, research assistance, collection development, and outreach activities to increase awareness and use of library resources and services at Harnett and at other instruction sites. Jennifer's hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friday. Stop by the Harnett Library to give her a warm welcome!
New Research Tool for Students - ProQuest Flow
Research is now easier! Students now have access to a new research management tool called ProQuest Flow. Flow is included with our new ProQuest database package through NC LIVE. This tool allows students to download full-text and PDF articles from databases, along with the bibliographic information, and save them to a cloud storage account using a PC or mobile device. They can then organize their resources according to their various assignments. Flow also allows for note-taking and collaboration on group projects. A variety of citation formats are available with accurate, automatic formatting. MS Word and Google Docs plugins are also available which allow students to insert citations as they type their paper and add a works cited list with just a click of the mouse. Study Room Surveys
We are conducting an on-going library study room survey this semester to assess how students use study rooms, and how they benefit from using the new technologies recently installed through our LSTA Literacy and Lifelong Learning Grant. The survey is accessible on the library's Get a Room page. Please encourage your students to reserve a library study room online and to participate in this important assessment survey.

Grants and Strategic Initiatives
- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. I started October 2014.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. I am from Sanford and have grown up knowing what a wonderful asset CCCC is to my community. I was very interested in finding a way to use my law degree to contribute to Sanford, and I think this position is perfect for that!
- Q. Describe what you do for the College.
- A. I am the Associate Director of Grants and Strategic Initiatives. I provide the necessary pre- and post-award support and guidance to acquire outside funding supporting the mission and goals of CCCC. Pre-award support includes grant research, identification of funding opportunities, submission coordination, writing assistance, and training. Post-award services focus on project management, reporting, and evaluation.
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. Sanford - My twin brother and I were born at Central Carolina Hospital!
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. Sanford - I am a proud alumni of Broadway Elementary School, East Lee Middle School, and Lee County High School (Go Jackets!).
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Interpersonal and Organizational Communications. After undergrad, I attended Campbell University School of Law and earned my Juris Doctorate, with a concentration in Advocacy.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. Sanford.
- Q. Marital status?
- A. I married my high school sweetheart in May 2011.
- Q. Do you have children/grandchildren?
- A. We have one on the way! Our first child, a boy, is due April 2015.
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I spend most of my free time with my family, friends, and my fat cat (Mason)! I am also an avid reader and online shopaholic.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone for being so welcoming here at CCCC. This transition has been wonderful thanks to everyone's kindness and patience. I look forward to working with you all!
News From The CCCC Family
Bereavements
Former CCCC librarian on the Sanford campus, Mary Coleman has passed. Mary had stage four cancer and passed away on Saturday, January 17. She will be missed and fondly remembered. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 21 at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church. Cards and expressions of sympathy may be sent to Mary's sister, Becky Danninger at 208 Crimmons Circle Cary, NC 27511.
Retiree Betty Pace's mother-in-law, Johnsie Buchanan Pace, 91, passed away on December 26. Services were held at Barbeque Presbyterian Church. Condolences can be sent to Harry and Betty at 12418 Hwy 27 West, Broadway, NC 27505.
Retiree Joyce Thomas' son, Barry Mark Poindexter, 53, died on December 26. Services were held at Rocky Fork Christian Church. Condolences can be shared with Joyce at 1410 Pendergrass Rd, Sanford, NC 27330.
Elaine Nichols (Nurse Aide 1 and Nurse Aide 2 instructor) passed away on December 2. She was diagnosed with renal cancer, it was in very advanced stages having metastasized to her lung and bone. She was a very strong and caring woman who will be greatly missed. Elaine worked up until November 12, her devotion to her students was never ending. Please keep her family in your prayers. A Memorial Service was held at the Pittsboro Community House on December 6, 2014.
Chef Gregory Hamm's stepmother, Carol Childress Hamm lost her battle with brain cancer on Thanksgiving evening. The memorial service was held in Booneville, NC, on December 1, 2014. Prayers are with Chef Hamm and his family.
Retiree Pam White Hunter's father, Claude L. White, 88, passed away on in late November. Condolences can be shared with Pam and Hugh at 12933 NC 27 W, Broadway, NC 27505.
Retirement
Dear CCCC Family,
Thank you for the warm retirement wishes. This has been a wonderful place to work over these past 25 years, and I value the friendships I have made. I will be working full-time as a lawyer again, and hopefully, I will return for some adjunct teaching. I will miss my CCCC family, but I am looking forward to what the future will bring. One of the many blessings I have received in life has been my ability to work with great students and co-workers at CCCC. Thank you again for a wonderful, rewarding career.

"It has been a delight and a blessing to have had the opportunity to work with you all at CCCC for the past 29 years. It's been fun to be a part of the college's growth over that time, especially as we worked together to develop our reputation for excellence and innovation.
While transitioning to retirement is an exciting prospect, it's bittersweet as well because I know that I will miss many facets of my work life here: the joy of having a part in serving and improving the lives of our students, the delight in seeing our graduates walk across the Civic Center stage beaming with pride, and most of all, I'll miss the pleasure of working with you and sharing our life's journeys together.
Thank you all for the many cards, gifts, well wishes, hugs, and tears that you've shared during this past semester. I leave with very fond memories of great friends and co-workers."
