WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
Congratulations to our Faculty & Staff Members of the Year!
Robert Powell (pictured in back, center), Department Chair of Justice Studies and Director of BLET, has been chosen as our Faculty Member of the Year. This recognition is based upon his record of successful interactions with students, effective classroom environments, innovations in teaching methods, professional development experiences, leadership roles beyond the classroom, past recognition, and exceeding expectations.
Morgan Steele (pictured second from right), Marketing Coordinator/Web Developer, has been chosen as our Staff Member of the Year. Morgan was recognized for illustrating a commitment to our mission, exceeding expectations, demonstrating leadership and innovation, efficiently using college resources, exemplifying a commitment to professional development, being a positive role model, sharing knowledge, and making suggestions to improve our success.
Both of these individuals will be recognized at our Professional Development Day on December 17. During this event, each will each receive a plaque, certificate, and a $500 cash prize. In addition, each individual will have the opportunity to represent our college at the statewide competition where the award recipient will receive an $8,000 cash prize and a plaque.

Fall PD Sessions - Sign Up Today!
Now that the semester is underway, it is a great time to begin signing-up for your Fall PD sessions. Seating is limited, so sign-up early by clicking on the registration link in the attachment on the Fall Professional Development Calendar.
All sessions will be held on the Lee Campus in the Smart conference room/Fitness building #810 starting September 11 and ending December 4. We will also continue to live stream, record, and connect to the Smart rooms on the Pittsboro and Harnett campuses.
An e-ticket is not required for check-in and there is no charge for any of the sessions. We hope to see you there!
Professional Development Day - Register Now!
The December 5 registration deadline is swiftly approaching for the Professional Development Day, to be held December 17, starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Civic Center.

Lead Advisor Featured by UNC-CH Carolina Covenant
Kelli Hammond, Central Carolina Works Lead Career and College Advisor at Chatham Central High School, will be featured in the UNC-Chapel Hill Carolina Covenant program's 10th anniversary celebration as one of its success stories.
The Carolina Covenant program provides eligible low-income students with academic and personal support, as well as scholarships, grants and work-study programs to enable them to graduate debt-free. Kelli was one of the first students assisted by the program. She graduated in 2008 with bachelor's degrees in Political Science and Communications.
"Without Carolina Covenant, I probably would not have been able to go to UNC-Chapel Hill," Kelli said.
Kelli is originally from Rutherford County, but now resides in Durham. As the Lead Career and College Advisor, she encourages high school students to take advantage of the North Carolina Career and College Promise program. That program enables them to take college classes tuition free.

Update From Central Carolina Works
Central Carolina Works is underway! The advisors have all reported a happy and smooth transition to their high schools. Enrollment is up and the advisors are diligently working with their CCP students to ensure success. The team is also beginning to focus on several grant objectives that include industry and campus visits for teachers. For updates and additional information on CCW, please visit www.cccc.edu/ccwblog.
The 2014 Health Fair is Coming!
The theme for the 12th Annual Lee County Schools/CCCC Family Health and Benefits Fair is ELECT TO BE HEALTHY!
The health fair will be held on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. There will be free health screenings, local resources, health education, a flu shot clinic, the bloodmobile, door prizes, and much more!
Please mark your calendars now so that you don't miss this fantastic event!
Harnett County Campus History Presentation
The annual Harnett County Campus presentation of the 'The U.S. Constitution: A Living Document and Its History' was held on Tuesday, September 16, in the Miriello Building. The presenter was Robert Barnes, CCCC History instructor. A crowd of about 60 students and faculty enjoyed an excellent presentation and delicious Constitution cake.
The presentation focused on the history of the U.S. Constitution, its importance as an Enlightenment Era document, and its significance to modern America. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions about the U.S. Constitution, its importance, and its relevance.
October Food Drive for Backpack Pals
The Spring Food Drive was a great success. Let's make it a bi-annual tradition by CCCC for its communities!
The October Food Drive will support Communities in Schools (CIS) of Lee, Communities in Schools of Chatham, and Buddy Backpacks of Harnett county. Additionally, the Pittsboro library is collecting food for the local food bank, CORA!
The backpack programs provide weekend backpacks stuffed with kid friendly non-perishable items to needy students, helping to assure that no kids go hungry over the weekend.
To help support their efforts we need your generous donations of kid friendly, non-perishable food items like:

Paralegal Program Partners With Legal Aid
On September 11, Legal Aid Attorneys David Wormald and Ayana Robinson presented to the Paralegal Students about Legal Aid's Pro Bono Clinic.
Central Carolina will be the second paralegal program in the state to partner with Legal Aid. Paralegal students will be supervised by their Lead Instructor Lisa Robinson, Attorney at Law, as they, the students, follow-up with clients who have contacted Legal Aid. Students will interview clients, research issues, and provide valuable follow-up information to the clients. This opportunity will give CCCC paralegal students valuable experience in client contact, interviewing, time management, and research, and Legal Aid will be able to continue to serve the needs of their ever-growing client base.
Annual Silent Auction

CCCC Faculty and Staff Lead Through Service Learning
Recently, CCCC faculty, staff and students volunteered their time and talents at the Breadbasket in Sanford.
Our CCCC family, including Torry Reynolds (pictured left), Director of College Success and Student Transitions, served our community by cooking and serving free hot meals to those that where in need.

Veteran College Fair and Veterans Day Memorial
Veterans Upward Bound in collaboration with Veterans Affairs will be hosting a Veteran College Fair and Veterans Day Memorial on Friday, November 14, 2014 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center in Sanford. This event will honor veterans for their dedication and service as well as provide information from various public and private institutions.
Veterans will be honored from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with a special memorial service. The College Fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where veterans can gather information on NC colleges and universities.
In an effort to ensure that all colleges and universities are represented, we are requesting that CCCC staff and faculty participate in this event by representing their alma maters. Annual Fall Open Mic at CCCC
Come join us for a great evening with the best writers in the area.
The CCCC Continuing Education Creative Writing Program invites staff, faculty, and the public to join writers of prose and poetry for our Annual Open MIC on Friday, September 26, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. We gather at the Mary Hayes Holmes Meeting Room in the Chatham Community Library on the CCCC campus in Pittsboro.
In an exciting first-time collaboration, writers featured in Volume 9 of The Red Clay Review will read their work, too. In keeping with its theme of food, we'll have plenty of refreshments. Copies of the latest handsome edition of The Review will be available for free.
Note to writers who plan to read. Sign in when you arrive. You'll read in the order you signed in. (Hint: If you want to read later in the evening, sign at the bottom of the page!) You'll have six minutes, including any introductions, background information, and closing remarks you wish to make. Our timekeeper is kind but firm.
Farewell receptions for Celia Hurley and Kathy McDonald
Celia Hurley, former Vice President of Institutional Advancement, retired from the college to join her husband, Jeff, on a new adventure in the land down under - Australia! A farewell reception was held on August 19.
A farewell celebration was held on September 15 for Kathy McDonald, the college's Marketing and Media Writer. Kathy will retire on September 30.
We send our best wishes to both Celia and Kathy as they begin their new adventures.
2014-2015 Center for Teaching and Learning Grants
Central Carolina Community College's Center for Teaching and Learning and CCCC Foundation invite your proposals for the 2014-2015 Center for Teaching & Learning Grants. Grant funds are available to faculty members who have identified instructional needs and can demonstrate a commitment to student learning outcomes through the grant proposal.
Central Carolina Community College Learning Grants:
- Support innovative projects that are designed to enhance student learning, promote student success, and further innovation in teaching and learning.
- Support projects on a one-time, one-year basis.
- Are flexible and intended to support ideas and projects at the appropriate stage of development to provide you with a tailored educational opportunity.
Grant applications may be submitted by individuals or groups who are full-time or part-time faculty members of Central Carolina Community College. A total of $700 in grant funds is available.
Grants will be awarded using a competitive selection process. Grant applications are due on October 31, 2014 by 3:30 p.m. and all activities must be completed by May 29, 2015. Completed activities/projects must be evaluated based on how student learning has improved. The Grant Application, Guidelines, and Project/Activity Evaluation form are attached.
Award winners will also be asked to provide a Faculty Roundtable session to share experiences with other CCCC staff and faculty. All appropriate electronic resources created during the project will be distributed through the Center for Teaching and Learning website.

Dental Hygiene Association Has New Treasurer!
Whitney Simonian, dental programs instructor, has been appointed to North Carolina's Dental Hygiene Association as treasurer elect (2014-2015) and treasurer (2015-2016). She is also the treasurer of her local component, the Durham-Orange Dental Hygiene Association. In her role she will be responsible for general financial oversight, financial planning, budgeting, reporting, and book keeping.
Whitney is a registered dental hygienist with a Master of Dental Hygiene Education degree and a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also a Dental Assisting National Board certified dental assistant.
Simonian, of Raleigh, joined the Central Carolina Community College dental department in the fall of 2014. Prior to joining CCCC, Whitney worked as a full-time dental hygienist in private practice since 2009. She is passionate about dental hygiene and looks forward to being a part of the imminent changes in the profession.
"This is a very exciting time for North Carolina dental hygienists! We are one step closer to being able to administer local anesthesia--a task that is legal for dental hygienists in all but just a few states in the US, including NC." Simonian said.
"I am honored to serve as the treasurer of the North Carolina Dental Hygiene Association and look forward to being a part of the imminent changes happening in our great state. It is important for educators to show students the importance of not only belonging in their professional organizations, but also being involved. It is through our association that our profession grows!"
News From Foundation
The 25th Anniversary Golf Classic, held September 17 at the Sanford Golf Course, attracted 140 golfers and raised $25,000.
The winning foursome for the AM Shotgun Round, First Flight, with a team score of 53, were (not pictured in order) Jack Radley, Dave Neff, Bobby Powell, Dale Bryant.
"The tournament was a huge success again this year" said Jonathan Hockaday, Foundation Golf Classic coordinator. "We are thankful for all the community support because they make this tournament what it is. Lee County has given so much to us. We will use all the proceeds from the tournament to go directly back to our students."
Since it began in Lee County, the Golf Classic has raised more than $500,000 and enabled the Foundation to award hundreds scholarships and other financial assistance to students.

New Online Tutorials and Quizzes for Distance Education
The Library has new online tutorials and quizzes for Distance Education classes available at http://www.cccc.edu/library/onlineresources/tutorials/. Quiz responses are now emailed to the student instead of the faculty. Students will need to forward their responses to their instructor if they have been assigned the library tutorials and quizzes. Please be sure to communicate this with your students when assigning the online tutorials.
Nursing Journals Now Online
Library nursing journals are now available online through the Ovid Nursing Community College Basic Journal Collection. The electronic subscription provides increased access to nursing journals at all our campuses. For access to the journals off campus, contact the library for the password.
Interactive White Boards
The library would like to get your input as we plan for future library services and resources. Be sure to take notice of our new white board by the library entrance and answer the question of the day. We appreciate your ideas and hearing what you would like to see in the library!

News From Green Central
The E-Conservation program from NCSU and Cooperative extension was created to inform and educate residents about ways to reduce energy use and increase energy efficiency. The program has funding to provide 250 North Carolina homes with an assessment and energy efficiency improvements up to $700. The improvements, completed by professional home energy contractors, reduce energy costs and enhance indoor comfort.
To learn more come to the information session in the Holmes Meeting room on October 20, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Also check out the E-Conservation program website to learn more.
Red Clay Review
The 2013 edition of The Red Clay Review is now available. This year's literary magazine revolves around the theme of food. Its powerful associations with memory, creation, and fellowship with loved ones make it a rich topic for writing.

Heike Johnson
Medical Programs Coordinator for Siler City and Pittsboro
- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. It has been one year and three months, since I started working for CCCC.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. My friend and peer informed me of the opening for the Medical Programs Coordinator position. My previous job required a lot of hours from me (about 70 every week) and I had to make a change.
- Q. Describe what you do for the College.
- A. I am a Medical Programs Coordinator at the Pittsboro and the Siler City Campus. I am planning and preparing classes for the Continuing Education Program. We currently offer NA I/ NA II/ Phlebotomy/Electronic Health Records/Central Sterile Processing/Pharmacy Technician and the Sleep Disorder Program.
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. I was born in Hanover, Germany.
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. I grew up in Bremen, Germany. Bremen is located in the Northern parts of Germany.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. I received my nursing education in Germany. I am a Registered Nurse.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. I live in Cameron in the Harnett County, Johnsonville area.
- Q. Marital status?
- A. I am married for 25 years.
- Q. Do you have children/grandchildren?
- A. My husband and I have two children. My daughter Brittney is 23 years old and my son William is now 20 years old.
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I love to be outside in my yard. I landscaped our yard and garden.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I came from home health nursing to this position and the college setting is truly challenging. Thank you for giving me another opportunity to learn.

Bereavements
Billy Freeman's father, William Merrell Freeman, passed away September 22. A memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church. Michelle Coore's mother, Debra Buchanan Coore, passed on September 12. Funeral services were conducted at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Please keep Michelle and her family in your thoughts at this difficult time.
Mike Peluso's father, Mr. Bart Peluso, recently past away due to illness. His home is in Florida and at this time we do not have information regarding funeral arrangements. Please keep Mike and his family in your thoughts.
Thadd McElreath's brother-in-law, Jonathan Bridges, died on September 6, in a traffic accident. Thadd and his wife Jamie would appreciate your support during this difficult time. Please send condolences to Thadd and Jamie's address at 1546 Zion Church Road, Sanford, NC 27330.
David Watson's mother lost her battle with cancer Wednesday, August 27. To honor her wishes there was no formal service and no public arrangements. If you are so moved, you may wish to consider something in her honor to a nonprofit working in the area.
