WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
Library Awarded Two LSTA Grants
The CCCC Library has been awarded two Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grants by the State Library of North Carolina. A Literacy and Lifelong Learning Grant in the amount of $18,760 will fund a project to convert library study rooms into technology-enhanced collaborative study rooms. The rooms will be equipped with a 40" touch screen computer with Microsoft Office software, Internet connectivity for online research, and a high-definition webcam so students can work together on group projects and record presentations for class assignments.
A Planning Grant in the amount of $26,225 will pay a consultant to evaluate the facilities space at the Lee and Harnett libraries. The consultant will determine how the libraries can better utilize existing space and make plans for future library facilities needs. Students, faculty, and staff will be asked to participate in focus groups and surveys to assess what each group needs in a library of the future. Watch for announcements later this semester for opportunities to participate!
LSTA funds awarded by the State Library of North Carolina are made possible through funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.

- Our online Research Guides provide an overview of library research and resources, as well as links to research databases to find materials in a specific subject area. Consider adding the link to a Research Guide in your Blackboard course or sharing it with your class.
- Have a reading list on your syllabus? Consider placing these materials on Reserve in the library for better student access. Personal copies and library copies can both be placed on Reserve at the information desk. Reserve Request Form
- If the Library doesn't own a book on your course reading list, or you need other materials to support your class assignments, you can request library materials be ordered for the circulating collections. Library Materials Request Form
- Library instruction sessions can be scheduled for your class to show them how to effectively find, evaluate, and use information in our online resources and complete class assignments successfully. Request a Library Instruction Session

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
Dog Days of Summer
Join in on Saturday, September 13, and have the cleanest dog in town! From 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., Lee County Campus will host the Dog Days of Summer Dog Wash! All proceeds benefit the Veterinary Medical Technology Program.
Scoops For Paws
Treat yourself! On Thursday, September 18, enjoy a nice scoop (or three) of yogurt at Sweet Frog. Sweet Frog will donate 15% of every purchase to the Veterinary Medical Technology program to help pay for new housing for campus animals!
Research Paper Published in Journal of Hydrology
Dr. Rodney Powell, Central Carolina Community College Chemistry Instructor, recently had more of his research published from when he was an active chemical oceanographer. His latest paper, "High frequency measurement of nitrate concentration in the Lower Mississippi River, USA" was recently published in the Journal of Hydrology.
25th Annual CCCC Foundation Lee County Golf Classic
Please mark your calendars! The Foundation is planning our 25th Annual CCCC Foundation Lee County Golf Classic. The classic will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Sanford Golf Course.
Red Clay Review
The 2013 edition of Red Clay Review is now available. This year's literary magazine revolves around the theme of food. Its powerful associations with memory, creation, and fellowship with loved ones make it a rich topic for writing.

Green Central Summer Tips
Looking for ways to be more green in the summer? Try these great tips from RainforestMaker.org!
Thermostat
Adjust your thermostat up two degrees in the summer and down two degrees in the winter. By taking this simple step, you would prevent two thousand pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Cooling and heating your home makes up approximately half of your home energy needs. Therefore, you could save a lot of money as well by making this simple adjustment. In fact, investing in a programmable thermostat will most likely pay for itself the first year. By lowering the air conditioning or heat before you go to bed and raising it when you wake up each night, this could save you one hundred dollars a year. Filters
Filter Cleaning and replacement on your air conditioner and furnace can prevent approximately 350 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year.
Water
Placing an insulation blanket around your water heater will prevent one thousand pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. If you place the setting to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, you will prevent an additional five hundred fifty pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Electrical Devices
Turn off your lights, computer, television, and stereo if you are not using them. Simply plug your devices into a power strip and turn that one switch off when you leave. This simple step will prevent thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.
Insulate your home
If you do this, you could prevent two thousand pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. You also receive the added benefit of saving approximately twenty-five percent of your energy bill. For great tips on how to insulate your home, visit Consumer Federation of America.
Energy
Tired of getting electric bills in the mail? Substitute your home's current power source with renewable power source such as solar or wind. To learn more, go to Green Power Network.
Your Car
Inflate your tires. Your gas mileage will improve by at least three percent. You will also prevent twenty pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere for each gallon of gas that you save. Visit Car Care to learn tips on proper inflation.

- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. I've been working at CCCC for two months now.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. I saw the opening for the PC Technician online and decided that this would be a great opportunity to expand my knowledge, learn new technologies and other ways to work with personal computers. The Harnett campus is also ten minutes from my house so that was a plus as well.
- Q. Describe what you do for the College.
- A. I am a PC Technician for the college and can fix any kind of computer problem.
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. I was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. I grew up in Princeton, North Carolina and have lived there for 20 years.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. I graduated from Pitt Community College and I received my Associates degree in Computer Information Technology.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. I currently live in Coats, North Carolina and have lived there for a little over a year.
- Q. Marital status?
- A. I have been happily married for almost two years now.
- Q. Do you have children/grandchildren?
- A. I have no children but I do have two dogs that I love like children!
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I love going to the beach and looking for sea glass. I collect it and make necklaces and pendants for bracelets. I'm also currently into photography, collecting coins, and metal detecting.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I am the PC Technician for the Harnett campus so if you don't see me around on the main Lee campus that is why. I am happy to be a part of the CCCC family now and hope that I can meet new people as the year goes on!

Bereavements
Brenda McNeill Willett, retiree from Central Carolina Community College died on August 19, 2014. Funeral Services will be held at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church, Broadway, NC at 3 p.m., Friday August 22, 2014 and the family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will take place at the church.
Charles McLeod, retiree from Central Carolina Community College, Continuing Education, passed away on August 17. A memorial service was held on August 20, 2014. Charles worked at the college from 1967 until his retirement in 1990. Correspondence may be sent to the family at 908 Evans Drive, Sanford, NC 27330.
