Green Office Challenge Winners Announced!

Once again the Lee County Library has taken the Green Office Challenge to new heights! Great job Green Catchers! How do they do it? Well, they are wonderful at recycling; have a green education bulletin board and help students identify earth day events to plan; expanded their team members this year and worked with the IT department to set printers to duplex and eco-print modes.

This winning team will receive lunch catered by our wonderful natural chef students and will be able to plant a tree or shrub to commemorate their dedication to conservation. Way to go!!

On behalf of the entire Green Office committee, thank you to all team members who competed this year. When we work together to conserve, increase comfort and save our limited resources we are all winners!

Annual Furniture Auction

The Central Carolina Community College Foundation Annual Furniture Auction was held on June 7 at the Harnett County Campus and raised over $25,000.

2014 Furniture Auction

Barbara Lloyd, of Lillington, and grandson John Stephenson, of Smithfield, load up their purchases at the Central Carolina Community College Foundation's June 7 Furniture Auction at the college's Harnett County Campus.

The purchases included a porch bench, picnic table and two jewelry boxes. Proceeds from the auction help provide financial aid for Harnett County students through an endowed scholarship fund managed by the CCCC Foundation. The proceeds also pay for materials used to produce the auction items.

Sweet Celebration

Support for Central Carolina Community College's educational mission and its students received a sweet thank you at the CCCC Foundation's annual Sweet Celebration reception, held June 12 at Cafe 121 in downtown Sanford.

Among the foundation donors and other college supporters gathered were (clockwise, from left) Ed Garrison, former college trustee, of Sanford; Virginia Hester, of Sanford; Linda Scuiletti, CCCC dean of Institutional Effectiveness; and Kay Garrison, and Dot Hubbard, both of Sanford.

Marchant thanked Baker for his generous partnership with the college over the years by providing floral arrangements and other assistance for many events.

Congratulations, Peggy!

Peggy Cotten

Congratulations go to Peggy Cotten, Library Assistant at the Lee Campus, for winning CCCC's Educational Office Professional of the Year for 2014. Peggy has been a member of the NCAEOP for the past 8 years. This year she also earned her Masters Certificate in the Professional Standards Program. We are proud of her for earning both of these distinctions!

Summer Reading Contest

It's not too late to join our summer reading contest. You can sign up at the Lee or Harnett libraries at any time. We already have about 20 participants between both campuses so far. When you sign up, simply set your reading goal, and you will be given a book log to track your progress, as well as a free treat. Then simply check in with us periodically and show us your book log for more treats. When you reach your goal, you will get a prize. If you need ideas for new books to read, take a look at our new Fun Reading Guide for suggested titles in your favorite genres. The contest will run through July 31st.

Culinary Arts Month at the Library

July is Culinary Arts Month, and what better way to celebrate than by sharing our favorite recipes! Stop by the Lee Library next month to see our display and to pick up some of our staff's favorite recipes to try at your next summer gathering.

The Veterinary Medical program has adopted out two cats and a dog in the last month.

Campus Security and Safety

Many thanks to the Security team at CCCC for their efforts to keep our campuses safe and well monitored. Each member of the team brings unique qualities and training to their position, and we appreciate their presence at Central Carolina Community College. Let's get to know them a little better.

Frank Bedoe Sr.

Frank Bedoe Sr., CPP, CHSIII, Director of Campus Security and Safety, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College three and a half years. Frank was born in Hildesheim, Germany and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Frank has an AAS in Law Enforcement, is Board Certified in Security Management (CPP), and Certified in Homeland Security Level 3 (CHS-III). Frank and his wife live in Apex. They have one daughter, two sons, and two granddaughters. Frank came to CCCC as the first full-time professional security person hired by the college. Frank provides direction for the campus security team members at all CCCC locations. He is responsible for training on emergency procedures, other in-house training, and security awareness. Among his many duties related to security, Frank serves as liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Frank's hobbies include collecting sports memorabilia. He served in the United States Marine Corps and held federal and local law enforcement positions.

Sylvester L. Turner, Security Officer, W.B. Wicker Campus, "SL" has been employed with Central Carolina Community College sixteen years. SL directed the security operations at the WB Wicker Campus. SL was born and raised in Sanford and is married. His hobbies are golf, swimming and all major sports. SL served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked for the Lee County Parks and Recreation Department for forty three years full and part-time. SL is presently on medical leave and will be retiring on July 1st. We would like to thank him for his contributions during his sixteen years at CCCC.

Jimmy Murchison

Jimmy Murchison, Contract Security Officer, Sanford Main Campus. Jimmy has been employed with Central Carolina Community College four years. Jimmy patrols the campus grounds to ensure the safety of visitors, students and staff at CCCC. Jimmy was born and still lives in Sanford. He graduated from W.B. Wicker and Durham Academy. Jimmy is married and has two grandchildren. His hobbies include horseshoes and baseball. Jimmy worked for the Lee County Sheriff's Department for 18 years.

Larry Farrow

Larry Farrow, Contract Security Site Manager, Sanford Main Campus. Larry has been employed with Central Carolina Community College two years. His duties include patrolling campus grounds, aiding in emergency situations, assisting with traffic issues, ensuring the safety of students, visitors and staff, and completing accident reports. Larry was born in Sanford, attended grade school and high school in the area. He is a CCCC graduate with an AAS in Recreation Leadership Technology. Larry is married and he and his wife of 40 years have three boys, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Larry's hobbies include playing softball, watching sports on television, spending time with his family, and attending church. Larry enjoys working at CCCC because it gives him the opportunity to meet people. Larry retired from the Sanford Fire Department after 31 years of service.

Calahan Maynard Jr.

Calahan Maynard Jr., Contract Security Officer, Sanford Main Campus. "Cal" has been employed with Central Carolina Community College one and a half years. Cal came to work at the college to serve after retirement. Among his duties are providing a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and guests. Cal was born in Williamson, Kentucky and grew up in Man, West Virginia. Currently Cal and his wife of thirty three years live in Sanford. Cal attended several military schools to include the Air Force Non-commissioned Officers Academy. Cal has training as a detention officer and in other security related courses. Cal's hobbies include maintaining a healthy relationship with his wife, cooking, playing with his dog, riding and maintaining his Harley, and an enjoying an occasional movie. After twenty two years of service in the Air Force, Cal is happy to interact with the faculty and students at CCCC.

Joseph Johnson

Joseph Johnson, Contract Security Officer, Sanford Main Campus, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College one and a half years. Joseph is responsible for patrolling the grounds and facilities, and providing assistance to students, faculty and visitors of CCCC. Joseph was born in Sanford and grew up in Raleigh. Joseph is a high school graduate, is unmarried and has two children and one grandchild. One of Joseph's hobbies is working on cars.

James Pearson

James Pearson, Contract Security Officer, W. B. Wicker Campus, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College fourteen years. James duties with the college include maintenance and security. James was born, raised and still lives in Harnett County. He is a high school graduate and completed some college courses. James and his wife have one son and five grandchildren. James' hobbies include golf and fishing, and he has also served as a pastor for the past eleven years. James Served in the Army and Army reserves for 13 years.

Gerome Williams Sr.

Gerome Williams Sr., Contract Security Officer, W.B. Wicker Campus, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College two years. Gerome patrols the campus and provides assistance to students, faculty and visitors of CCCC. Gerome was born, raised and currently lives in Lee County. Gerome is a high school graduate and has completed some college courses. He and his wife have three children and five grandchildren. As well as serving a pastor for the past thirty years, Gerome enjoys hunting and fishing.

Sgt. James Lassiter

Sgt. James Lassiter, Pittsboro Police Department, Pittsboro Campus has been employed with Central Carolina Community College over three years. Sgt. Lassiter serves as supervisor of five other security officers and is assigned to the CCCC Pittsboro campus. Sgt. Lassiter was born in Durham and grew up in Pittsboro. Sgt. Lassiter has attended Durham Technical Community College, Alamance Technical Community College, and Central Carolina Community College. Sgt. Lassiter and his wife have three children and he enjoys fishing and farming when he is not working.

Terry McDowell

Terry McDowell, Security Officer, Siler City Campus, has been employed part-time with Central Carolina Community College for seventeen years. Terry provides security and assistance to students, faculty and visitors of CCCC. Terry was born in Randolph County and grew up in Randolph and Chatham counties. Terry has a computer programming degree along with numerous other law enforcement certifications. Terry and his wife have two grandchildren and for fun he enjoys fishing and gardening. Although Terry has retired as a Law Enforcement Officer, he still remains on active reserves with the Liberty Police Department.

Gina Von Cannon

Gina Von Cannon, Security Officer, Siler City Campus, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College for thirteen years. Gina provides evening security and locks up when the campus closes. Gina was born and raised in Siler City and never left her hometown. Gina is a high school graduate, attended Randolph Community College for a basic law enforcement course while employed at the Siler City Police Department. Gina has received several certificates related to law enforcement during her thirty and half years at the police department. Gina has a son but no grandchildren yet. Gina loves to collect coins and cookbooks and travel to places she hasn't been before. Gina loves being a friendly security guard, mingling with students and staff, and to make a difference in people's lives.

Jason Smith

Jason Smith, Campus Police, Harnett Main and Harnett Health Science Center, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College two and half years and is a campus police officer/patrolman. Jason grew up in Des Moines, Iowa completed high school, has an Associate in Art from Central Carolina Community College and a Bachelors of Science with a Major in Psychology from Campbell University. Jason enjoys fitness, family and working with his hands to build/repair things. Jason, a Whovian, is a huge fan of science fiction, fantasy, and anything related to those genres.

Randal Bordeaux

Randal Bordeaux, Lillington Police Department, Lillington Main and Health Sciences Center, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College approximately four years. Randal has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Religion, Master of Divinity in Chaplaincy, Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and is currently finishing his Master of Criminal Justice Human Resources and Policing. Randal also serves as a Church Planter with the NC Southern Baptist Convention and is Lead Pastor at Crosswalk Baptist Church. Randal has served in the Army/Army National Guard of NC, Military Police and is a veteran of Desert Storm.

Paul McLean

Paul McLean, Contract Security Officer, W.B. Wicker Campus, has been employed with Central Carolina Community College seven months. Paul provides security and assistance to students, faculty and visitors of CCCC. Paul was born and raised in Harnett County and still resides in Harnett County. Paul has an Associate Degree in Business Administration and an Associate Degree in Industrial Management. Paul and his wife have one child and two grandchildren and when he has free time he enjoys fishing, sports and traveling.

Note: Members of the Harnett County Sheriff's Department and other Lillington Police Department officers work part-time at the West Harnett Center and fill in at the Lillington campus and Harnett Health Sciences Center.

During the Spring and Fall semesters, off-duty and reserve Sanford Police officers supplement the Campus Security dayshift staff at the main campus and provide coverage for graduations and athletic events.
