Annual Rabbit Run 5K and Earth Day Celebration Success!
Thanks to CCCC faculty, staff, and friends, for making the 2nd Annual Rabbit Run 5K Race/Children's Fun Run and Earth Day Celebration in Pittsboro on Saturday, April 13 such a success. It was an early start to the day, but well worth the crowd of runners that came out on such a beautiful spring morning.
See all photos from the Rabbit Run 5K Race/Children's Fun Run on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/RabbitRun5k.
As part of the Earth Day Celebration, visitors were able to tour The Chatham Cottage. The Chatham Cottage is a small (500 sq.ft.), affordable and energy efficient home built by Sustainability Technologies students at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro, NC.
Learn more about the construction of Chatham Cottage on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/ConstructionOfChathamCottage.
Thanks to everyone that made these events so fun and exciting!
WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
Spring Is in the Air
Spring has arrived! As the trees and bushes bloom, we can feel the excitement of the insects and the birds as they buzz around and sing. Even though we're covered with a yellow "cloud" of pollen that engulfs our cars and sidewalks, we love this time of year!

Happy Earth Day!
Every Day is Earth Day at Green Central! April 22 is the official Earth Day in the United States. How will you celebrate? Our green teams are gearing up with some special events. You can celebrate Earth Day at the Sanford campus at the Farmers Market and the Lillington campus BIO 140 class will host an event.
What will you do?
Some ideas include: bring a plant to your office to add to indoor air quality, carpool to work or lunch, recycle old office files, take a walk during your break, and notice all the green in our trees.
News From Student Learning
Inaugural ACA Faculty Training!
On April 4-5, over 30 faculty and staff members participated in the inaugural ACA Faculty Training with the College Success Center staff. This training helped to prepare all three campuses for the implementation of the college's comprehensive first-year experience (FYE) program in 2013-2014.
A major initiative of CCCC's Title-III grant project is to integrate an FYE program, which is guided by the "extended orientation" model. This newly-adopted model includes: (1) an enhanced on-campus orientation that will help students make an initial connection to the campus, and (2) ACA "first-year experience" courses designed with a common core curriculum that help to introduce students to intensive academic and college-related concepts.
Cougar Pets News
We have had quite a few adoptions of both dogs and cats over the past couple of weeks. This time of year is our busiest for adoptions and our candidates for adoption are worth considering. These animals, waiting patiently for permanent homes at the CCCC veterinary medical facility, are healthy, have all their shots, and have been spayed/neutered.
Visit the Cougar Pets website on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CougarPets for more information and pictures of all the animals that need homes.
You can reach Jonathan at (919) 718-7465 or by email at jloftis@cccc.edu if you are interested in adopting.
PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Amanda Matthews
Career & Technical Distance Education Coordinator
- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. I started working October 22, 2012 as the Career & Tech Ed Distance Education Coordinator. Prior to this, I worked as an Admissions Assistant at Campbell University.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. I have known for most of my adult life that I wanted to work in a higher education facility. I became very interested in working with the Distance Education Department after I met with some of the staff last summer. Thankfully, not long after meeting with them, the opportunity to join the department presented itself. It was difficult leaving behind the friends I made at Campbell University, but I believe this is where I am meant to be. I am able to use the education I earned at ECU to assist me with my responsibilities and, as a bonus, I have gained many friends in the process.
- Q. Describe what you do for the College.
- A. My primary responsibility is to train the Career and Tech Ed faculty with Blackboard. I am also a good resource for faculty if they are looking for ways to enrich their online courses.
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. I was born in the panhandle of Texas in Pampa. I spent the first three years of my life in Perryton.
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. I grew up in China Spring, Texas which is just outside of Waco. My family still lives there so I am able to visit at least once a year to see them and to eat real barbeque along with other great Texas cuisine.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. I graduated from East Carolina University with a BS in Business Education in 2010 and an MS in Vocational Education in 2012. Prior to attending ECU, I graduated from CCCC with an associate degree in Office Administration.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. I currently reside in Fuquay-Varina.
- Q. Marital status?
- A. I am married to Daniel, a Wake County Deputy, and we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary this summer.
- Q. Do you have children/grandchildren?
- A. I have an 8-year-old son, Preston. In addition to my human child, we have many pets including 5 dogs, 2 cats, a cow, and chickens.
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I am known for my love of reading. It is not unheard of for me to read 2-3 novels in one week. Also, I love the time spent with Daniel and Preston. I also enjoy baking and on occasion decorating cakes. I love watching sports, especially football and can always be heard cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and the University of Texas Longhorns.
