CCCC Introduces New Confucius Classroom Instructor To Community
Professor Ling Huang and her son, Quianfan Chen
Chinese song and music delighted those attending the reception for Professor Ling Huang, Central Carolina Community College's new Confucius Classroom instructor, Monday at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center.
Huang and her son, Qianfan Chen ("Fan" for short), performed two traditional Chinese songs to express their gratitude for the warm welcome they have received since arriving in Sanford Oct. 12. Fan performed on a "xiao," an end-blown Chinese flute, and Huang sang a Chinese song expressing a lady's happy mood while picking bamboo flowers.
"The song also represents my mood on being here in Sanford," she told those at the gathering.
Huang holds a bachelor's degree in English literature and a master's in Jewish literature. She is fluent in English and teaches it at Nanjing Normal University, in Jiangsu province, the People's Republic of China. For the next two years, she will be sharing her knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture through the Classroom, as well as doing presentations for area schools, organizations and companies who want to learn more about China.
Fan is attending East Lee Middle School. He said he has already made some friends there.
"I have made the correct decision to come to the college," Huang told the gathering. Then she asked Sanford Mayor Cornelia Olive, "What is the secret to having a city that is full of friendly people?"
The mayor smiled and responded, "We welcome people and other cultures readily," then added, "You just illustrated why you are so precious to us. You brought us such charm, delicacy and beauty. We welcome you most heartily."

Small Business Center Helps A Dream Come True
When Joni Pavlik, Dean of Media Technologies & Public Services, and her husband, Ray, decided to start a business selling wines and other products made in North Carolina, Ray went back to school. As he was renovating the historic 1920s general store that now houses "unWINEd," he signed up for every SBC course he felt would better equip him to make the business a success.
The wine shop, located 5 miles south of Pittsboro opened on November 4th. The Pavliks carry more than 20 wines and mead made in North Carolina as well as artisan flatbread, gluten free and vegan vegetable chips, cheeses, and other food products. Wine is available by the glass or by the bottle. You can find more information about unWINEd on their website, www.unwinednc.com

News From Green Central
The CCCC Green Team met on November 10th to learn about a new paper-recycling program on the Lee County campus. Each building will have a new paper-recycling receptacle in a public place, either in a hallway or copy center. All paper can go in these receptacles except for newspaper, manila folders and magazines. The great news is that paper is a commodity and CCCC will be paid for all of the paper we recycle!
We are eager to report back to you all with reports of full containers and the need for more. Please encourage all of your staff members, faculty and students to participate in this new Green Central endeavor.
Thanks to Lee Iron and Metal, CCCC Facilities Staff and Dr. Marchant for getting this effort officially underway!
If you have any comments or suggestions about this effort please contact Laura Lauffer, CCCC Sustainability Coordinator at llauf177@cccc.edu or 545 8032.

Cougar Pets News
Is there room in your family and your life for a pet? Our candidates for adoption this month are worth considering. These animals, waiting patiently for permanent homes at the CCCC veterinary medical facility, are healthy, have all their shots, and have been spayed/neutered. They are ready to love you.
Sprocket is an adult male beagle with a sweet nature and a winning personality. Sprocket loves to go for walks and is always ready to play with you. He is anxious to join a human family and will fit right into almost any environment.
Dudley is an adult male beagle. He is a little shy, but very lovable when you get to know him. He loves treats and would be happy to have a human to keep him company while he watches sports on television. Football and basketball are his favorites. Dudley would be a good match for a family with older children or an adult who lives alone.
We are pleased to report that the following dogs have gone to permanent homes: Woody, Cheyenne, Mogli, Rascal, Beau, and Barry.
Visit the Cougar Pets website at cougarpets.webs.com/index.html for more information and pictures of pets available for adoption. Call 919.718.7465 or email jloftis@cccc.edu if you want to adopt.
PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Nicole Crissman
Administrative Assistant, Maintenance
Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
A. I've worked for the college for 13 years. I was born and grew up in Sanford. After high school, I attended CCCC and earned two Associate degrees, one in accounting and one in business administration. After I graduated, I was offered the job of Administrative Assistant for the Maintenance group and I've been here ever since.
Q. Please tell us what your job responsibilities are.
A. I'm pretty much the contact person. Most requests for support or services from the Maintenance department come through me. I'm responsible for control of keys, for maintenance and repair of all of the college vehicles and for small details such as making sure new employees have correct nameplates on their office doors.
Q. That sounds like a demanding job. What can the faculty and staff do to make it easier?
A. Everyone will receive a prompt response to their requests, but it helps if last minute requests are kept to a minimum. We have a small crew and most days we're spread pretty thin. If you send a precisely detailed request via email, we will have all the information we need to do your job in a timely manner.
Q. Tell us about some of the challenges faced by the department in the last year.
A. The weather is always a challenge. We are responsible for ensuring that faculty, staff and students have safe access to all of our sites. Our guys will be out in the dark clearing the snow and ice when everyone else at the college is heading back to bed because the college is closed due to the weather.
The 50th Anniversary Kick-Off last July was both the most fun and the hardest work for our crew. Along with dozens of volunteers from the faculty, staff and alumni, the maintenance team worked around the clock to make the event the spectacular success it was.
Q. What do you do in your leisure time?
A. I'm single and I love to travel. I've been to New York and New Orleans in the last few years and look forward to doing more traveling in the United States. I still live in Sanford and have family here, so holidays are family time.
