4CNC Is On The Air
Central Carolina Community College Broadcast Production Technology students (from left) Randy Miller, of Chatham County, and Josh Kindle, of Cumberland County, check out the computer control panel for the college's new television channel, 4CNC, with Kassie Lyles, the college's television instructor. CCCC has launched the newest television channel in the area, 4CNC, in partnership with Lee County. The county is allowing the college to operate and provide programming for its educational access channel on Charter Communications. The channel will carry coverage of both the county and college. The broadcast students receive real-world experience in creating programming and operating a channel - training that will benefit them in future education as well as in their career. 4CNC can be seen on Charter channel 105 for digital signal or channel 129 for cable box feed. It can also be seen at the college's web site, www.cccc.edu, On the home page, click on "4CNC: Learn More" and then, "You Can Watch Live Online!" You must have a Windows Media Player or WMP plug-in to see it.

Teens "On the Brink of Greatness"
The Summer Youth Rally held on June 27 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center drew nearly 200 young adults from Chatham, Harnett, Lee, and Sampson counties. They came together to share ideas and best practices, identify resources, and collect information on education, career, and training opportunities. The goals of the event were to help these young people find solutions to the critical issues that affect their everyday lives.
Co-sponsored by Triangle South Workforce Development Board, Lee County Youth and Family Services, Chatham County JobLink Center, and Central Carolina Community College, the Youth Rally featured speakers and interactive workshops especially designed to appeal to youths between the ages of 14 and 21. Rosalind Cross, Interim Director of Triangle South Workforce Development Board, wishes to thank the many members of CCCC's faculty and staff who worked hard to make this event an outstanding success.
Christopher (Play) Martin, former rapper and motivational speaker at the Youth Rally with Theresa Cry, Director of Organizational & Professional Development and Russell Ingram, Youth Program Coordinator.

Green Central - Course Resources For The Coming Year!
In January of 2011, one hundred fifty six faculty members participated in the CCCC sustainability in the curriculum survey. This survey was part of our project to assess sustainability in the curriculum and determine how instructors were integrating sustainability concepts into classes. The response was impressive. Over 50% of faculty surveyed integrate sustainability concepts into their courses, and in many cases use sustainability as course outcomes measures. Another 12% plan to start integrating sustainability this coming academic year. The breadth of curriculum programs integrating sustainability issues was also impressive, from nursing to economics to motorcycle mechanics.
A great resource for many programs is the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization's website dedicated to The UN Decade for Education in Sustainable Development. Instructors will find an impressive array of curriculum resources including student activities, web resources, glossaries, student and faculty journals, and intensive support for faculty's professional development for each module. The broad topics of sustainability include an introduction to sustainability issues, public health, environmental policies, culture and religion, and women's development issues. Check out this valuable resource, it can add a little or a lot to your future courses. Please let me know if this is a helpful resource and how you used it. Remember, I am always available to assist any faculty member in finding resources for your classes. http://www.unesco.org/education/tlsf/TLSF/decade/

Amanda Carter "Bugged" By Blackboard
Amanda Carter, Distance Education Coordinator, was recently recognized as a "Bug on the Run" by Blackboard, Inc. Amanda has been a piloting member of the Blackboard "Bug Squad." The squad is made of e-learning professionals across the globe that collaborate to find and fix "bugs" in the popular learning management system. To be recognized, Amanda recently contributed the most votes, comments, and activity on issues, and the company took note of her valuable contribution by awarding her a certificate and a bug for her desk. Join us in congratulating her on the admittedly funny title "Bug on the Run." Behind the laughs, however, is a commitment to working with faculty and students to ensure e-learning works for them.

Cougar Pets News
We are featuring two adult male beagles this month, Barry and Beau. The animals waiting patiently for permanent homes at the CCCC vet tech facility are healthy, have all their shots and have been spayed/neutered. They are ready to love you.
Barry
Beau
Barry and Beau share the charm and goofiness that makes their breed so lovable. Barry is Mr. Congeniality and has never met a person he couldn't love. Beau is a little bit shyer but is a charmer when he gets to know you. Either dog would fit into almost any household and make a wonderful addition to the family. Beau would be an ideal companion for someone who lives alone or a senior.
Visit the Cougar Pets website at cougarpets.webs.com/index.html for more information and pictures of pets available for adoption. Call 919.718.7465 or email jloftis@cccc.edu if you want to adopt.

Cougar Profile
Nancy Robinson
Veterinary Medical Instructor, Lead
As the college revs up to celebrate its 50th anniversary, we thought it would be appropriate to visit its past through the eyes of a long time employee. This year marks Nancy Robinson's 40th year teaching in the Veterinary Medical Technology program. Her CCCC roots go deep: Nancy holds two degrees from this institution, an A.A.S. in Veterinary Medical Technology and an A.A.S. in General Education. Nancy also earned a B.H.S. from Campbell University.
On a more personal note, Nancy met and married a young instructor at CCCC in 1974. Her husband, Wayne, is now Vice President of Administrative Services at the school. Nancy and Wayne have two children, a son, Daniel, and a daughter, Jennifer. They are the proud grandparents of a four-year-old boy and a four-month-old girl. The Robinsons live at the edge of Sanford on 23 acres that represent just about everything they want in life: beauty, serenity, and plenty of room for Nancy's horses.
When we asked Nancy to what she attributes the nationwide recognition of CCCC's Vet Med program, she credited Dr. J.C. Brown, the first head of the program, with establishing a high standard of excellence that has endured to this day. She remembers her student days under Dr. Brown vividly: "He terrified us and inspired us," she said. "None of us ever forgot what he taught us."
Nancy reminisced about the early days, both as a student here and as a young teacher. "You knew everybody's name," she said, "It was a close knit family." Nancy recalls the Sanford campus when it contained only one building, what is now the Wilkinson building, a community of friends who got together frequently for oyster roasts.
Nancy reminded us that CCCC's Vet Med program was one of the first four in the country to be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Nancy is proud of her own service to the profession: She has been a member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board for many years, the state agency that reinforces and upholds standards in the field. Finally, she spoke of her pride in the caliber of veterinary technicians produced by the program to which she has dedicated most of her adult life. "Our graduates have so many job opportunities," she said proudly. "That is the bottom line."
