WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
Chinese Ethnic Troupe Dance Performance
Exciting and colorful Chinese folk dances, music, and martial arts lit up the stage at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center during the performance of the Ethnic Arts Troupe of Jishou University on Sunday afternoon, November 7th. An enthusiastic audience of more than 800 filled the Civic Center for the event.
The college was able to bring the Ethnic Arts Troupe to the Sanford area through its partnership with North Carolina State University's Confucius Institute. N.C. State is the first university in the United States to develop a partnership with a community college for a Confucius Classroom. Shuya Che, a visiting professor from Nanjing University, is the instructor for the program, which teaches Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture. Watch the performance online!
Lee County Schools/CCCC Family Health and Benefits Fair
The joint CCCC-Lee County Schools Health and Benefits Fair drew a crowd at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center Tuesday, Nov. 2. CCCC students provided services such as barbering and blood pressure checks. Vendors were on hand to talk to the visitors about what they offered, such as health services, insurance, and health products. Many of those who came also took advantage of the opportunity to get their annual flu shot.

Community College Survey of Student Engagement Provides Important Information to CCCC
For the first time in the spring of 2009, Central Carolina Community College administered the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE). The CCSSE provides information about effective educational practices in community colleges. CCSSE's survey instrument, the Community College Student Report (CCSR), captures student engagement - the amount of time and energy that students invest in meaningful educational practices - as a measure of institutional quality. CCSSE reports on five national benchmarks for effective educational practice in community and technical colleges. The benchmarks address these areas:
- Active and Collaborative Learning
- Student Effort
- Academic Challenge
- Student-Faculty Interaction
- Support for Learners
Results of the first CCSSE and CCFSSE administrations were shared with the college at the Professional Development day held on October 27, 2009 and through CougarBytes (September 4, 2009 - Volume II, Number 25). The CCSSE revealed that CCCC is above the national mean in four areas: Student Effort, Academic Challenge, Student-Faculty Interaction, and Support for Learners. We are below the national mean in Active & Collaborative Learning. CCCC is above the North Carolina mean in the same four areas, the exception being Active & Collaborative Learning.
CCSSE benchmarks focus on institutional practices and student behaviors that promote student engagement and that correlate highly with student learning and persistence. The CCSSE survey instrument can help us focus on educational best practices and identify areas in which we can improve. CCSSE and CCFSSE data can benefit planning and review across the college by providing important information, and the special focus questions can help us in Writing Works assessment.
Also, CCCC faculty participated in the CCFSSE - the faculty version of the CCSSE. Participation in the CCFSSE gives us the ability to compare faculty and student perceptions and responses on the survey questions. The national response rate on the CCFSSE for the two years prior to 2009 averaged 33%. The response rate for CCCC faculty was 63.5%.
With the spring 2010 administration, CCSSE will begin providing a new executive "Key Findings" booklet. These tailored booklets will provide college-specific data in an easy-to-read and easy-to-share format. The booklets will make the CCSSE and CCFSSE data much more easily accessible to all areas of the college.
CCCC is benefitting from the CCSSE and USA Today initiative that provides information about our college at the USA Today Web site: www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-11-16-CCSSE_N.htm
CCCC'S Expanding Wi-Fi Highlighted in EDTECH Magazine
Tommy Holder, CCCC's Director of IT, is quoted in the Wednesday, November 10, 2010 issue of EDTECH Magazine as saying, "Our WLAN deployment was demand driven." He goes on to note that both faculty and students expect mobile access to support their academic research and communications capability. NC Writer, Suzy Barile, at Chatham Community Library on December 16th
Please join the Friends of the Chatham Community Library on December 16 at 7:30 p.m. for NC writer Suzy Barile, author of Undaunted Heart: the True Story of a Southern Belle and a Yankee General. Following the end of the Civil War, Union troops occupied Chapel Hill. After years of hardship, now Sherman's troops were patrolling its streets. A young Union general visits the home of UNC president and former governor David Swain to inform him of the occupation. When Swain's daughter Ella meets the young general, the lives of people on opposite sides of war are forever altered. Barile, a great-great-granddaughter of the couple, tells a fascinating true story of their scandalous courtship and marriage.
Friends of the Library programs are held in the Holmes Family Meeting Room of the Chatham Community Library, 197 Hwy. 87 North, on the Pittsboro campus of Central Carolina Community College. Access convenient parking from the roundabout on 87N, facing the library. All programs are free and open to the public.

PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Linda Scuiletti
Coordinator of Institutional Effectiveness and Research
Linda Scuiletti is an expert at doing research. When she considered applying for a job that seemed to be custom made for her background and experience, she subjected the institution to close scrutiny. It worked out well. The interviewers at CCCC found Linda to be very well qualified for the newly created position they were seeking to fill. Linda found the college to be exactly the kind of place she wanted to work. "I was impressed by how student focused this institution is," she told us.
Linda's title, Coordinator of Institutional Effectiveness and Research, is formidable and doesn't accurately convey that she is here to help. Because a broad spectrum of agencies and institutions scrutinize the college, part of Linda's job is compliance but she perceives herself as a facilitator. The question Linda is asking people is "How can I help you achieve your goals and meet your challenges?" Her expertise in planning and research are the tools she brings to the table to do this.
Linda comes to CCCC from a stint as Chair of the School of Technology at Southwestern Michigan College. She holds a master's degree in adult and community college education from NC State and a bachelor's degree in mechanics and industrial engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Linda and her husband, Frank, live in Cary. Their four children are out of the nest. Frank works as Coordinator of Academic Programs for SACS in Raleigh. Linda has completed all course work for her doctorate in adult and community college education. Her dissertation will focus on the connection between childhood maltreatment and subsequent criminal behavior. As transplanted northerners and enthusiastic bikers, Linda and Frank are spending their leisure time discovering the many paved greenways in the Cary area.
