WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

CCCC Exceeds State Performance Standards

Central Carolina Community College has exceeded performance standards set by the State Board of Community Colleges, according to the board's just-released 2010 Performance Funding Measures Report.

Central Carolina is one of only 24 of the 58 colleges in the North Carolina Community College System to meet or exceed the standards for the eight Performance Measures adopted by the board in 2007. According to the board's report, the measures are core indicators of student success. They also capture the essential elements of the mission of the state's community colleges.

Distance Ed Introduces New Blackboard Tool

Do you want instant and timely exchanges with your students? The Distance Education Department is pleased to share Blackboard's new and exciting tool that connects you and your students online in real-time conversation. Read below for details and tutorials on how to get chatting.

Wimba Pronto is a chat application similar to GroupWise's instant messenger tool with which you may be familiar. Wimba Pronto, however, is offered free through Blackboard and enables students, classmates, and instructors to collaborate in real-time. This academic-centric instant messaging platform was designed to work with course management systems like Blackboard.

Once a Blackboard user installs this program on his or her computer, a window automatically generates a list of all the classes in which a user is enrolled as well as a list of all the participants in each class. This makes instant exchanges easy.

We have developed tutorials for both students and faculty interested in Wimba Pronto that can be found on the college website via the Distance Education Cougar's Den.

Faculty can check out www.cccc.edu/distanceeducation/
cougarsden/faculty/links/
for the two documents entitled "Wimba Pronto Setup for Instructors" and "Wimba Pronto- How to Begin" to get started. Students will need to check out the Den at http://www.cccc.edu/distanceeducation/
cougarsden/students/tutorials/
for the document "Wimba Pronto Setup for Students."

If you have questions or would like individualized training, please contact the distance education staff at destaff@cccc.edu.

We are hoping this will help our distance students feel more connected with their courses, classmates, and the College. We envision this being a great first opportunity to incorporate synchronous communication and learning into our online classes. (Don't worry. We're still investigating web conferencing and lecture capture on a larger scale.)

Cougar Pet News

Late breaking news! Lena, featured in the July 3 issue of Cougar Bytes has been adopted.

We are featuring two animals this month who are currently residing in the CCCC Veterinary Technology facility on the Sanford campus and who need loving and responsible homes. All animals will be spayed/neutered and up-to-date on their shots when adopted.

7-year-old male Beagle

Leroy Brown is a 7-year-old male Beagle. Unlike his namesake, Leroy is a good dog who has remained sweet and friendly through a tough life, most of it spent in research facilities. He is as playful as a puppy and well socialized. Leroy asks very little of life, someone to take him for walks, play with him, make sure there's fresh water in his bowl, and provide him with a peaceful place to nap. In return, he will bring you boundless love and fierce loyalty. He'll be happiest if he is the only dog in your life.

2-1/2 year old female cat

Snuggles is a 2-1/2 year old female domestic short hair cat. She is shy and independent, but a lot of her aloofness stems from spending most of her life in a research facility in a cage. Snuggles would blossom in a loving home where she could learn what humans are like at their best: being the devoted and tireless servants to a royal feline. She doesn't like dogs and would prefer to have you all to herself.

Visit the Cougar Pets website at cougarpets.webs.com/index.html for more information and pictures of Leroy and Snuggles. Call (919) 718-7465 or email jloftis@cccc.edu if you want to adopt.

Video Equipment Update

In order to help students know the process, would you please include this information in your syllabus for those who need the use of video equipment?

"Please feel free to use your own recording equipment, or the hard drive camcorder in the Lee campus library, as long as you can submit the assignment in the format (dvd, etc.). Students please contact BJ Thompson in the Lee campus library x7375 to reserve a spot during the (one week time frame) that the recording equipment will be set up in a study room in the Lee campus library for your use . The Sanford library staff can burn a DVD of your video for you after using their camcorder. For the price of 50 cents the library provides a blank DVD and an envelope for use in submitting this project. Please note that equipment will not be available after the assignment due date unless the instructor makes special arrangement with the library staff."

Instructors, hard drive camcorders are now available in the library for reservation by you for student use in the Lee campus library for a one week period for class assignment use. (Equipment cannot be removed from the library by students due to checkout policy.) Instructors, please send your contact information, the one week period date range before your assignment due date, and a copy of your assignment to Renee Dusenbury. Please ask the students to call BJ Thompson for reserving the equipment, room, and time slot at the Sanford campus at 7375. The library has limited staff to help students, but wants to make the equipment available. The instructor is responsible for having or reserving the equipment with which to view and grade the assignment after receiving the assignment. Thank you for helping us serve our students.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Casey Migliore

Casey Migliore
Nursing Instructor

Casey Migliore is leaving CCCC in August, but we are profiling her here because she is a shining example of the culture of excellence here at the college. Casey has been on the nursing faculty for two years. She came here to teach for two reasons: First, she was, and continues to be, concerned about the shortage of nurses in North Carolina and in the United States. Secondly, CCCC appealed to her because the Associate Degree in Nursing program is a rigorous curriculum that produces a very high caliber of graduates. "If you survive to complete this demanding program, you possess the tools for success in the nursing profession," Casey told us. "I am very proud to have been a part of it. I take away with me a high standard for teaching in this field."

Casey is leaving us because she has been awarded a five-year fellowship to Duke University to earn her Ph.D. in Nursing. She has trumped herself by also winning a scholarship from the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFCN) that will help fund her demanding full-time academic program. The other good news about the CFCN scholarship is it requires Casey to commit to three years of teaching in North Carolina after she completes her Ph.D. program. We would love to see her back here at CCCC some day.

Casey is married and lives with her husband in Willow Spring in Wake County. He is a math teacher and a football coach in Johnston County. They plan to stay in this pretty little town and Casey will commute to Duke. Her ultimate goal is to do research in chronic diseases with a primary focus on diabetes. She plans to continue her relationship with CCCC and will try to come back during summers to help prepare the college's nursing students for their licensing exams. Good news for students in that program.

Casey has a message for current nursing students and for R.N.s working in the field: "No matter how hard it seems, give serious consideration to continuing your nursing education. Apply for scholarships and fellowships, as I have. There is funding out there that can facilitate advancement in your field. There is a desperate need for good nurses and nursing administrators, teachers and researchers. Nursing is a field where there is plenty of opportunity for advancement."
