WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
Whole Lot of Graduating Going On
CCCC's faculty and staff joined students and families in an ongoing celebration of achievement as graduates of both curriculum and continuing education programs donned cap and gown to receive degrees, diplomas, certificates, and accolades.
Donna Flowers (center), of Lee County, receives her Associate in Applied Science in Accounting from Central Carolina Community College President Bud Marchant during the college's May 13 Spring Commencement at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. Flowers, in a wheelchair because of a broken foot, gets an assist from fellow graduate Alex Dawson (right), of Harnett, who received his AAS in Laser and Photonics Technology. The college held morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies because of the number of graduates. Flowers and Dawson were the speakers at the morning program.
Phyllis Huff, Dean of Adult and Continuing Education, rises to speak at the Continuing Education Medical Programs graduation ceremony. Phyllis spoke about the benefits of ongoing education and told the audience about her own lifelong ongoing learning experiences. In the background are President Bud Marchant and Stelfanie Williams, Vice President of Economic and Community Development.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
CCCC Offers Community Speakers Bureau
Central Carolina Community College adds another community resource to its services with the establishment of a Speakers Bureau.
"This is one more way we at the college are strengthening our service to the communities we serve," said college President Bud Marchant. "We are excited about this new opportunity to share our expertise."
The Speakers Bureau consists of members of the college's administration, faculty, and staff. Their years of education and experience in the topics they speak about can enliven and enlighten any community meeting.
Organizations, clubs, schools, churches, businesses, and civic groups in the college's service area.
So far, about 25 administrators, faculty, and staff are available to speak on almost 100 different topics. The topics range from business ethics to the War on Terror, from the Constitution to organic gardening.
The Speakers Bureau's website, www.cccc.edu/speakersbureau, includes speaker biographies, topics, and speaker request forms. Requests can also be made by contacting Irene Smith at (919) 718-7518. At least two weeks advance notice is preferred.

Lee County Relay for Life News
In CCCC's sixth year of having a Lee County Relay for Life team, we broke a record in our fund-raising: $3212.99. To date, our team has raised in excess of $11,000 for this cause. These dollars will translate into making this year's theme a reality for those who hear the dreaded words: "You have cancer." CCCC helped celebrate more birthdays!
Kudos to the following employees who were part of the team: Lisa Key Brown, Amanda Carter (co-captain), Lisa Chapman, Renee Dusenbury, Brenda Keller, Joni Pavlik, Ginger Harris-Pike, Susan Poindexter, Karen Sasser, Melissa Staley, Bianka Stumpf (co-captain), Ty Stumpf, Martha Youngblood, and Janet Zurbach.
Thanks also to the other employees who came by our tent as visitors and impromptu volunteers.
Thanks, too, to Marcie Dishman and her staff for providing us with promotional publications and items to distribute at the event to show that we are a caring institution committed to the community.
See you at Relay 2011!

Cougar Pets
I hear people on campus talking about adopting new pets for their households and I cannot help but be happy that so many animals are finding loving homes. I would like to spread the word about the animals on CCCC's main campus that are part of the Veterinary Medical Technology program. We have cats and dogs that are up for adoption year round. These animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped, on heartworm and flea prevention, and up to date on all vaccines.
They are also enriched by the students in the VMT program, which gives the animals time out of the kennels. During this time, the animals get to meet new people, get trained in basic obedience (dogs only), and get to play and be the cat or dog that they are. If you are interested in adopting from the VMT program, please check out the website http://cougarpets.webs.com/index.html. On this website, you will find pictures and bios for the animals in the colonies as well as contact information and an adoption application. There is no fee to adopt animals from the VMT program. All that we ask is that you send us some pictures once your new pet has settled into their new life.

Jim Felton
Director of Small Business Centers and Civic Center
If you are planning to start a new business in Lee County, a session with Jim Felton is the first good decision you need to make. This is a man who keeps in his head an enormous database of resources right here, right now. He has a gift for giving new entrepreneurs pragmatic and positive feedback that provides them with the tools and the adrenaline to make their great idea a reality.
Last month, 14 years of tireless effort on behalf of small business in Lee County was recognized when Jim was named Small Business Advocate of the Year at the 25th annual Small Business Banquet. Central Electric marketing director, Nancy Gust, who presented the award, described Jim as a champion of small business, saying, "He tirelessly works to promote the civic center, the college, our business community - and passionately fosters the entrepreneurial spirit of each and every dreamer who makes an appointment to meet with him."
Jim received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at Old Dominion University and spent 22 years as an electrical engineer for Carolina Power & Light. Service to community has always defined his life. He has served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, the Committee of 100, BB&T, the United Way, and the Rotary Club. He is a deacon of the First Baptist Church.
Jim lives in Sanford with his wife, Suzanne. Their two grown children have given Jim and Suzanne the grandchildren Jim describes as "the loves of my life." Jim announced recently that he will retire at the end of 2010. He will be enjoying his grandchildren, "puttering around the house," and working in the yard. He plans to catch up on his reading and learn to take naps. Sounds like a plan. Jim, we'll miss you.
