Also pictured (from left) is Thomas' family: husband Charles Thomas, and parents Robert and Deborah Garrison.

Cristian Wood, family, and Michael Daley

Cristian Wood (center left), a secretary at Central Carolina Community College, was honored as the college's Operational and Support Staff Employee of the Year. Also pictured are (left) Wood's grandmother, Peggy Jones, and (right) father, Dale Lewis.

Three Central Carolina Community College employees were honored for outstanding service at the college's annual Circle of Excellence Awards program April 19 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center.

College employees gathered from the campuses and centers in Chatham, Harnett, and Lee counties to recognize three of their peers for exemplary service to the students and the college: Carl Bryan, Social Science and Wellness Department chair and physical education instructor; Haley Thomas, Enrollment Services coordinator; and Cristian Wood, secretary.

Each received an award plaque, a $500 check from the business sponsor of the award, and a reserved parking place on campus for the next year. The three are now the newest additions to the college's prestigious Circle of Excellence. Their names will be engraved on the permanent Circle of Excellence wall plaque at the college's Lee County Campus.

"They are fine examples of what Central Carolina Community College is all about," said CCCC President Bud Marchant. "We are so proud of them - it's hard to make a big enough deal out of it."

Many other members of the faculty and staff were recognized for length of service to the college.

Confucius Classroom Plants Tree

Shuya Che plants tree

Professor Shuya Che (right), Central Carolina Community College Confucius Classroom instructor, wields a shovel during the April 29 planting of an Eastern Red Cedar tree by members of her Elementary Chinese-1 class. The tree planting on the college's Lee County Campus commemorated Chinese Arbor Day-March 12, U.S. National Arbor Day-April 30, and Chinese Labor Day-May 1. Among those taking part were Jon Matthews (kneeling), the college's dean of University Transfer, Health Sciences, and Developmental Studies; and students (back, from left) Roseanna Terry and Aleida Dominguez, both of Lee County. In addition to the tree planting, the class enjoyed listening to Che tell about the origins and meaning of Chinese Arbor Day and celebrating the birthdays of students in the class whose birthdays fall between July and December. Class members also presented Che with a vase of flowers in appreciation for her enthusiasm in teaching.

Memorial Tribute to Bob Blue

Please join us as we pay tribute to the terrific and talented Bob Blue who died suddenly on Mar. 27, 2010. In addition to being a performer and director in our area, Bob was a former theatre teacher at Lee County High School. He was also an adjunct instructor at CCCC in the humanities. For over a decade, his theatre company performed Shakespeare and other playwrights' work in CCCC venues like the Civic Center and Jonesboro School. Many of you were either his student or co-worker.

This memorial will include speech, reading, and music dear to him by some of the many who loved him. Come together in a space Bob loved to act and direct in. Pay tribute to his contribution to our private and public lives. We hope to see you there.

Remembering Erma Carlisle Proctor

Erma Carlisle Proctor

I was a sixth grader in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1946 when I encountered an inspired teacher who was a profound influence in my life. We called her Miss Carlisle. It was only in the last few weeks that I realized that my Miss Carlisle married Truby Groce Proctor, moved to Sanford, N.C. in 1963 and died here at the age of 94 on April 11, 2010 after a long and productive life as an educator and member of the Sanford community.

Miss Carlisle was the first person who ever told me not only that I could go to college, but also that I should go to college. Later, in my senior year in high school, she helped me to apply for as many scholarships as we could find that I was qualified for, and rejoiced with me when I landed a full scholarship to Barnard College in New York.

Emma Carlisle Proctor has been a benefactor of Central Carolina Community College for many years. Her presence will be missed at the annual Scholarship Banquet, which she always attended. The family has asked that memorial gifts be made to the Erma Carlisle Proctor Scholarship through the Foundation. This scholarship provides assistance to single parents. Condolences may be made to the family at:

ESL Class Tours Lee Library

My Intermediate ESL Class from Jonesboro Center wants to thank Tara Guthrie and the Library Staff at Lee Campus for a very informative and interesting tour on Thursday, April 15. Some of our students had never visited any library before that day! Several got their first library card and checked out a book for the first time ever!

In celebration of National Library Week, the tour was arranged with our new Director of Library Services.

Ms. Guthrie was so warm and welcoming and really made the visit very special. Most of the students plan to return to use all the library has to offer. Another visit is planned next semester.

Michael Cheek

Michael Cheek
Barbering Instructor

Michael Cheek, Central Carolina Community College lead barbering instructor at Harnett Correctional Institution, has been named Educator of the Year by the Greater Crede et Vincent Jaycees Chapter of the North Carolina Junior Chamber of Commerce.

"I was honored by this recognition," said Cheek, who has been teaching at HCI for five years.

The HCI Jaycee chapter welcomes young inmates who work within the organization to provide service to the community and to acquire personal growth, skills, and contacts essential for success in society. North Carolina is one of the few states that have active, inmate-led Jaycee chapters in correctional systems

Cheek graduated from Chatham Central High School, attended Central Carolina Community College and graduated from the Sanford Lee School of Barbering. He is a registered Master Barber/Barber Instructor. Before going into education, Cheek worked in Chapel Hill, where he had UNC-Chapel Hill Tarheel basketball players, such as Jimmy Black, Raymond Felton, Danny Green, Will Graves and others, as clients. He remains the barber-of-choice for many team members. Before every game, he's on the road to cut their hair. In appreciation, he received a Championship ring and an NIT watch from the current team members.
