CCCC Holds Spring Open Registration
The Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center was a busy place as students signed up for their spring semester classes during open registration. University transfer student Will Bridges (right), of Sanford, discusses taking some of his classes via the Internet with Bianka Stumpf, CCCC director of Distance Education.
Accounting student Ashley Desselle (right), of Cameron, Harnett County, works on her class schedule with instructor Drew Goodson during the college's spring open registration.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
CCCC REAL Program Graduates Entrepreneurs
Central Carolina Community College's REAL (Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning) course held its fall graduation Dec. 16 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, in Sanford. The 16-week class, offered in partnership with N.C. REAL Enterprises, trains students to turn their ideas for a business into a feasible business plan.
The graduates were (front, left to right) Beth Hall, Aleida Hernandez, Jeremy Strothers, and Alex Benitez; with Lisa Chapman, CCCC vice president of Academic Affairs; Joni Pavlik, CCCC dean of Business and Media Technologies and Public Services; and Diane Kannarr, CCCC REAL, business and marketing instructor; back row, from left, Bob Joyce, Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce president; graduates Samantha Selix, Roshonda Peele, Elizabeth Crudup, and Brooke Paschal; and Dr. Bud Marchant, college president. At the graduation, but not pictured, were Malinda Todd, associate director of N.C. REAL Enterprises; Stelfanie Williams, CCCC vice president of Economic & Community Development; and Don Miller, GATE counselor for the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center.
Investment in United Way Pays Off For Pam Riddle
"I've always given to United Way," said Pam Riddle, tears streaming down her face when she realized she was the winner of a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt in the United Way of Lee County Automobile Giveaway 2010. Pam, who is an OST instructor on CCCC's Harnett County Campus, won the hard way, by being the last name left in the box in the reverse drawing. The drawing was open to all those who donated an hour's pay of their salary each month.
CCCC's Resident Marine Historian Consulted on Explosives Spill
When WRAL was reporting on the recent explosives spill at the state port in Morehead City, they knew whom to come to for clarification. Here's what Sal Mercogiliano, history instructor at CCCC and a former Merchant Marine, said about the PETN spill:
"It was fortunate that the PETN was in smaller drums and not one large container, which would have made an explosion more likely. It sounded more like an industrial accident, and unfortunately, that happens quite frequently with containers and the movement of cargo."
The port was closed and the area around the port was evacuated while the spill was contained and cleaned up. There were no injuries.
Exceptional CCCC Student Dies
Jeffress Allan Wells, 73, died peacefully at home on Sunday, December 13, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Wells retired from a 42-year career with the Department of Agriculture in 1996. At the age of 71, he enrolled in the automotive restoration program at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford where he excelled as a dean's list student. His classmates and instructors are currently supporting him by working to complete his main project, the restoration of a 1946 Dodge business coupe.

PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Virginia Brown
Vocational/Technical Liaison
Back in 2007, the vocational technology programs presented the kind of challenge that the folks at CCCC can't resist: Jobs were abundant in the Engineering, Computer Information, Networking, and Machining technologies; however, the excellent programs in these fields offered by the college were under enrolled. An aggressive and innovative strategy was developed to spread the word.
Virginia Brown was hired early in 2008 to work with three part-time recruiters to address recruitment. She was the proud possessor of a brand new Masters of Arts degree in Community College Administration from Western Carolina University. Her undergraduate studies were at Blue Ridge Community College and UNC-Asheville. "I'm a product of the excellent community college system here in North Carolina," Virginia told us, "and a true believer in the value it brings to students."
Virginia was born and grew up in Chapel Hill. When she accepted her position here in Sanford, she tried commuting but recently bought a home in Sanford and has come to love it here. She shares her home and her life with Pudge, a cattle dog mix she adopted soon after arriving. She is a passionate Tarheel and an avid NASCAR fan and tells us that travel and sports have top priority in her leisure time.
Virginia and her recruiters range far and wide to bring the good news about CCCC's Vo-Tech programs to potential students. She talks about forming partnerships, networking, and making connections. She is particularly proud of their work with the S.T.E.M. program pilot project at East Lee Middle School in Sanford for students majoring in the fields of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics. "We reach out to middle schoolers because we want to set their focus on technical fields as they move into high school," Virginia said.
CCCC's Adult High School and GED graduates are another target for the Vo-Tech recruiters. Participants in the Human Resource Development program are another audience. "We need to start from the beginning, educate these people about the value of community colleges, the promise of jobs inherent in our Vo-Tech programs, and the excellence of the instruction here," said Virginia. "We constantly look for innovative ways to bring our message to as broad an audience as possible."
While Virginia's job is to fill up the Vo-Tech classes, she says that their activities are synergistic with the college's other recruiting activities. "We are meticulous about steering potential students to the programs that are appropriate for their interests and abilities," she said, "So, we have a gratifying spillover into other areas at CCCC."
