Professional Development Day Produces Results
Thanks to all the participants and presenters who made Professional Development Day so successful. Click here to see a list of the individuals who worked so hard to make this day a success.
A busy day of learning to expand their communication and communication skills worked up an appetite at the college's Professional Development Day October 27 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. Among those taking part were Linda Spivey (left), Employment Specialist in Human Resources, and Betty Matthews (right), Administrative Assistant for the Division of Economic and Community Development.
After a satisfying lunch provided by Subway, administrators, faculty, and staff relaxed during the lunch hour before continuing their workshops at Professional Development Day.

Fundraiser for Dalanie Webb Scholarship Fund
One of the fears we as parents have most is losing one of our children. Such is the case for the parents of Dalanie Webb. She was a student at Central Carolina Community College in the Dental Program before she was tragically killed August 9, 2009, in an automobile accident. She was 20 years old. Her family is hosting the Sanford Drag Race, a womanless beauty contest, to raise funds toward a scholarship in her honor to the Dental program at CCCC.
I am one of the contestants. Contestants will put on their best gown and compete in a leg contest. Then we will conduct a dance routine we hopefully have perfected by then. Each contestant will dance to his hand picked song, answer 2 questions, and money raised will count towards his votes.
I am asking for your donation. For each $10.00 I can raise-I receive one (1) vote. All proceeds go to the Dalanie Roe Webb Dental Scholarship.
Checks can be made out to SDR (Sanford Drag Race), and mail to Rocky Geist, 336 Park Ave, Sanford NC 27330.
I think this is a wonderful way for this family to honor their daughter. Now excuse me while I go rehearse. I am willing to race to the finish line in heels, dress, and wig for Dalanie.

Prevent Swine Flu - Good Advice
The following makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know...please pass on.
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
- 1. Frequent hand washing.
- 2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe).
- 3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive, and powerful preventative method.
- 4. Clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
- 5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
- 6. Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc.) as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate, or do any harm.
Keep in mind that the target population is the younger crowd, so pass this on to your kids and grandkids. The older population will have some immunity but it doesn't hurt to follow these guidelines!!
PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Katherine McDonald
News and Creative Writer, Marketing & Public Affairs
If you have heard something, seen something, or read something about Central Carolina Community College recently, chances are Kathy McDonald generated the words. Kathy, who has been with CCCC since August 2006, reports all of the news about the college and sends her stories out to the radio and television stations, newspapers, and magazines in our service area and beyond, frequently accompanied by photographs she has taken herself.
Kathy was born and grew up in Maryland. She earned her B.A. in biology from Western Maryland College but found her real calling in journalism. When she and her husband, Tom, moved to North Carolina, she went to work as a reporter for The Sanford Herald. CCCC was one of her beats and, after four years at the Herald, she moved on to the college. Kathy and Tom, a retired architectural and graphics designer, live in western Harnett County. They have three children and three grandchildren. Their son, Jonathan, graduated from CCCC in 2006 and is now attending North Carolina State University where he is majoring in electrical engineering.
When she isn't fighting the pernicious dandelion encroachment in her yard, Kathy enjoys reading good books. Some of her favorites include the Good Book and Book of Mormon, along with classic fiction such as Lord of the Rings, Jane Eyre, and David Copperfield.
Next time you attend a college event, keep an eye out for Kathy. She'll be juggling a pad, a pen, and a digital camera, accurately recording the facts, and writing down the names of everyone precisely. Her work tells the continuing story of this institution, not just the details, but the whole human story, and she reflects us at our very best and most interesting.
