Celebrate Green Central Trade Show Home Tour
The Green Building and Renewable Energy program at the Chatham Campus and the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association present the Celebrate Green Central Trade Show Home Tour at the campus October 16 and 17.
This fun, family-friendly event features bands, campus farm tour, Chatham County home tour, trade show, and renewable energy, biodiesel, and sustainable agriculture demonstrations. Admission is free.
The celebration kicks off Friday, October 16, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The trade show features local businesses offering services in green construction, renewable energy, sustainable building products, biodiesel production, and sustainable agriculture. Homeowners can learn about rebates and incentives available for renewable energy and energy efficiency retrofits.
The trade show continues from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 17. Visitors can also take the free, self-guided Sustainable Home Tour from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The tour features homes under construction to view the "guts" of green building, see rainwater catchment systems, grid-tied and battery photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems for space heating and residential water, passive solar design, and much more.
Visitors will also see the very beginning construction on the Chatham Campus's Sustainable Technologies Building and the Chatham Community Library, the joint county-college facility. Celebrate Green Central visitors will learn about the design and the unique green elements of these buildings: living roofs, constructed wetlands, LEED Gold certification, and more.

Chuck Mann Hits the Big 5-0
Students of Chuck Mann, Chair of the Transportation Technology Department, had a big surprise waiting when he arrived at his office October 1. It was his 50th birthday and the students celebrated with some humor about his reaching that milestone. Mann was greeted by students dressed in black, an animated figure of the Grim Reaper, walls draped in black, black balloons, and an 'Over the Hill' banner. Seated in a decorated wheelchair, with a 'Slow and Old Zone' walker in front of him, Mann holds back a laugh as he shows off a bottle of prune juice from his students. Happy 50th, Chuck!! You're not getting older, you're getting better!!
WeBuildPeople Campaign
I am currently working with the YMCA on their WeBuildPeople Campaign which is raising money for their before and after school care programs. 100% of the funds raised goes to our local YMCA and their before and after school programs. The YMCA is a 501(c)3 charity and is one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the area dedicated to helping children and families live healthier, more productive lives in spirit, mind, and body. If anyone is interested in contributing any amount to this campaign which aids our CCCC students in jobs and before and after school care for their kids, please contact Carl Bryan at 718-7285 or cbryan@cccc.edu.
PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Sandra Martin
Secretary, Sculpture and Pottery Studio
In 2003, CCCC and its Small Business Center formed a partnership with the Siler City business community. As a result, the NC Arts Incubator was born. The Incubator occupies five buildings on Chatham Street in Siler City and is the nucleus of a thriving artistic community of galleries, shops, and restaurants. The original building at 138 Chatham Street now houses CCCC's Professional Arts & Crafts program that was developed to teach artistic skills in poetry, clay sculpture, and metal sculpture. The jewel of the program is the Sculpture Studio, operated by CCCC students, where their work is exhibited. Here they learn how to present and show their work and develop basic business skills that will enable them to survive in their chosen profession.
Sitting in the middle of this whirlpool of activity is Sandra Martin, who provides support for the year-round, ever-changing activities of the studio. Sandra has been with the college for 10 years and has worked with the Studio since it opened. "I love the energy and optimism of these young artists," says Sandra. "The CCCC program really nurtures their developing talent. It's a privilege to see them grow and mature as artists."
Sandra is Tarheel born and bred. She was born in the town of Wadesboro and earned an associate degree from Wingate University. Sandra and her husband, Dee, live in Liberty, North Carolina. They owned and operated The Children's Place, a childcare facility in Liberty, for 17 years but sold the business some years ago. They have two grown children and much of their spare time is spent enjoying their three grandchildren. Sandra uses some of her free time to lead a community aerobics class. In addition, she manages the Liberty Association of Churches thrift shop and extends a cordial invitation to stop by and take advantage of their Halloween bargains in the next few weeks. All proceeds go to support the Association's emergency assistance fund.
News From the CCCC Family
"Thank you for your many acts of kindness during the passing of my brother. It was uplifting to see the care and concern demonstrated by my CCCC family. Please continue to keep the McCrimmon family in your thoughts and prayers. Again, thank you." Markita McCrimmon and Family
Sue Whitman, Industrial Relations Assistant, is recuperating following her surgery. She will appreciate hearing from her CCCC family at 1767 Quince Loop, Sanford, NC 27332.
"I want to thank my CCCC family for all their kindness. The flowers, cards, phone calls, and the support are cherished. You all are a wonderful group of caring people and I 'thank you' from the bottom of my heart." Debra W. McNeill
"We cannot begin to express our gratitude and show our appreciation for the successful plate sale we had this past Friday. The success far exceeded our expectations and we sold more plates than we accounted for. This achievement could not have been possible without the outpouring of help we received from so many of you. So many of you made desserts, sold tickets, purchased plates, made monetary donations and took the day off of work to volunteer your time. Special thank you goes out to Ronnie Measamer, Laura Musselwhite, Crystal Smith and Alicia Thomas for helping prepare the plates (and for working all day without the chance to eat!!). Also special thanks to Joel Oldham, Nicole Crissman, Abby Walker, Nancy Shue and retiree Gene McNeill who assisted in delivering plates for us. This has been a difficult time for us, but the kindness we have received makes it tolerable. Our surgery date is set for October 20th-please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you kindly!!" Christa K. Mashburn
Alma Wright, mother of Jim Wright (Recruiter) passed away on Friday, September 25, 2009. Funeral services were in Greenville, SC. You may remember him with a card/note at P.O. Box 4074, Sanford, NC 27331.
