WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
All Personnel Meeting
Strategic planning provides a framework for action. During Thursday's All Personnel Meeting, participants had a unique opportunity to contribute to that framework. Employees engaged in small group discussions that explored the college's strengths and weaknesses, as well as forces outside the institution; opportunities and threats. The conversations were rich and everyone shared and learned.
The many comments that were generated will be sorted and summarized in the coming days. The categories that emerge from the discussions will help focus future planning meetings during which a college mission, vision, values, and goals will be identified and finalized.
I truly appreciate the work of those assisting, the facilitators, the Social Committee, and the All Personnel Meeting Ad Hoc Committee. Everyone was committed to making the event a success.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
Confucius Classroom Inaugurated At Central Carolina CC
The opening reception for the college's Confucius Classroom, on September 15, brought together leaders of the college, community, local government, and business with educators from North Carolina State University and its Confucius Institute.
NCSU's Institute is the first one in the United States to develop a partnership with a community college for a Confucius Classroom and CCCC is the only community college in the United States to have one.
The Confucius Classroom programs will be open to residents, students at the college and local schools, and businesses within the college's service area of Chatham, Harnett, and Lee counties. Through the Classroom, they will have access to Institute programs such as Chinese art exhibitions and other cultural events. They will also have opportunities to visit the People's Republic of China and to have Chinese visit this area. The goal is to increase mutual understanding, improve relations between the countries, and benefit businesses in both.
Dr. James Zuiches watches as Dr. Bud Marchant and Professor Shuya Che unveil the plaque for the Confucius Classroom.

Fundraiser Scheduled for Kidney Transplant
I just wanted to remind you about the benefit for Tommy and Christa Mashburn to be held on Friday, September 25. If you are on the Sanford Campus and would like to order a plate for lunch, please contact me by Friday, September 18 by 1:00 pm. The organizers are trying to finalize food plans, and they need to get a handle on the number of plates that have been presold by that date.
The price of the plates is $7.00 and I will go and pick them up and bring them back to the bookstore on the Lee Co campus. You can come by and pick them up after 11:30 that day. If you not be here that day, please plan to go by the community building in Broadway and pick up a plate.
This is all about caring for our fellow workers and showing them our support. Thanks in advance for your support of this fundraiser and a special thanks to those of you who have already responded. Contact Nancy Shue, (919) 718-7541

Central Carolina VMT Grads Top National Exam
Graduates of Central Carolina Community College's Veterinary Medical Technology program in 2009 outperformed graduates of other VMT programs in both the United States and Canada on the Veterinary Technician National Exam.
Results of the June National Board results have been received and, of the 29 CCCC graduates, 28 passed the exam on the first try, for a 97 percent passing rate. The average passing rate was just 74 percent for the approximately 3,000 first-time test takers at other VMT programs in the United States and Canada.
"For the past few years that we have been charting this, our grads consistently outperform the other candidates on the June VTNE," said Dr. Paul Porterfield, chairman of the college's VMT program. "These high scores really speak volumes about the teaching and learning in our program."

PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Shuya Che
Visiting Professor Confucius Classroom
Imagine traveling half way around the world from an ancient walled city on the Yangtze River with a population of almost 8 million people (the size of New York City) to rural Sanford, North Carolina, population 28,000. There are some similarities between the two places: Nanjing, China is famous for its beautiful plum blossoms and its extremely hot, humid summers. Sanford is famous for its spectacular azaleas and its extremely hot, humid summers. Perhaps small things like this will help Shuya Che feel more at home here as she brings us gifts of friendship and knowledge from the Chinese people.
Shuya's fields of interest are Chinese linguistics and literature. She received her doctorate in these subjects from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. She earned her masters and bachelors degrees in the same fields from Henan University, Henan, China. Shuya is an associate professor at Nanjing Normal University and lives in Nanjing with her husband, Xiangyang Cui, who is also a college professor, and 15-year-old daughter, Yixiao Cui. In the short time she has been in the United States, Shuya has been overwhelmed by new impressions, new sounds, new tastes, and she finds it difficult to describe what she is experiencing. She expresses appreciation for the warm welcome she has encountered everywhere she has been and finds that Americans and Chinese have more in common than either side may realize. She finds our attempts to pronounce her name correctly humorous, but has faith that we will master that and many other Chinese words as well.
Shuya will be teaching classes in the Chinese Mandarin language and culture to college and high school students, the public, and the business community. She will divide her time between the three CCCC main campuses as well as several local high schools. We have a lot to learn about Shuya's language and culture so we will be keeping her very busy, but we hope she will find the time to discover our beautiful state. We'll do our best to make her feel at home here.
Shuya Che with her husband, Xiangyang Cui and daughter, Yixiao Cui
