WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
Foundation Auction Raises $19,000
An enthusiastic crowd - some eager bidders and some just spectators - gathered for the eighth annual Central Carolina Community College Foundation Furniture Auction June 6.
All had a great time. The bidders offered a total of $19,358 for the more than 100 handmade wood and metal furnishings auctioned off. The spectators had fun watching the bidding under the direction of auctioneer R.J. Wicker, of Sanford, who could usually manage to get the bidders to go higher.
From whimsical figures made out of pipes to handsome home and yard furniture to sturdy utility buildings, the auction provided an impressive array of skilled work by inmate students in the college's carpentry and welding classes at Harnett Correctional Institution.
Each year, the pieces they make are auctioned off and the proceeds put into a scholarship endowment for students of the college from Harnett County.
"At Central Carolina, we want to instill in every student an interest in community service," said Bill Tyson, the college's provost for Harnett County programs. "The HCI prisoners don't have the same opportunities for this as regular students, so making the furniture for the scholarship fund auction gives them an opportunity to return something to the community."
Tyson encouraged the crowd to "bid high and bid often." They took his advice. The event set a record for auction sales.
"It's the best one we've had, with more people and more money raised than ever," said Diane Glover, foundation executive director. "It means a lot to the students that people will come to support them in these difficult economic times when the demand for financial assistance is so great."
Those who worked to make the event a success, in addition to Tyson and Glover, were: Crystal Baker, Harnett Campus Receptionist; Charles Bell, HCI Welding Instructor; Gloria Oldham, Administrative Assistant to Provost Tyson; Cindy Page, Harnett Administrative Specialist; Sharlene Satchell, Receptionist; Edward Taylor, HCI Carpentry Instructor; Daniel Thomas, Director of Correctional Education; Mary Walker, CCCC HCI Secretary; and Harnett Campus Maintenance Staff Danny Dean, Johnny Gene Dickens, Nancy Guy, Michael Morrison, and Jasmine Thompson. Also assisting was Barbara Dickens, sister of Ed Taylor.
A big thank-you also goes to all those employees who came to support the auction!
Jennifer Byrd and Donald Holder, both of Mamers, haul away some stools, part of their highest-bid winnings at the Foundation's Furniture Auction. Both are CCCC graduates.
Harnett Provost Bill Tyson hoists a plant holder for bidders to see during the CCCC Foundation's Furniture Auction June 6. Ed Taylor, HCI Carpentry Instructor, keeps track of the bidding while auctioneer R.J. Wicker acknowledges a bid.

PERSONNEL NOTES
Cougar Profile
Sean Quesenberry
Veteran Services Coordinator/Financial Aid Specialist
The 169 veterans now attending classes here, most of whom have served their country in Iraq or Afghanistan, have a friend at CCCC. Sean Quesenberry's expertise is as a financial aid specialist, but he is enormously gratified that he is able to help these men and women navigate their way to a better education and good jobs in civilian life.
Sean has been at CCCC for a year now, having previously worked in a similar capacity at John Wesley College. He grew up mostly in North Carolina and, until a few weeks ago, commuted to the Sanford campus from Thomasville, NC. He has just moved into a new apartment in Sanford, significantly reducing his commuting time.
Sean has a B.A. in Bible Theology from John Wesley College. He has an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University and is currently working on his Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership at Argosy University.
Many of the veterans Sean assists are reservists who were recalled to active duty and are able to attend CCCC under one of the G.I. bills now operational. He also supports dependents of vets who died in service or who are 100% disabled. "Most of the veterans who come to CCCC arrive in my office with a very positive perception of the college," says Sean. "These are very focused and highly motivated men and women who have a pretty good idea of what their goals are. All they need is a little help to obtain the funding and ensure that they are moving in the right direction. "
Sean is single and likes listening to "almost any kind of music". He enjoys reading history and is an avid fan of college sports. Yes, he's a Tarheel fan!

Bless you all." -Bill Edwards, Jonesboro Center
