ESTC Gets New Burn Building

The Emergency Services Training Center at Central Carolina Community College inaugurated its new 2,800-square-foot live-fire training Burn Building April 3 with a big fire.

"This facility will take fire departments back to the basics of live-fire training," said Joey Shue, Fire/Rescue Training coordinator at the ESTC. "It will teach them to go into a smoke-filled building and search out the base of the fire while performing rescue operations with charged hose lines and practicing instant command procedures."

He was elected to the position at the organization's Spring Conference, held March 7 at N.C. State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, in Raleigh. He will assume the presidency of the organization in 2010.

Loftis worked in the field of veterinary medicine intermittently for 13 years before deciding to make a career of it. He graduated from Central Carolina's VMT program in 2001 and went to work at N.C.State University's Large Animal Hospital. After a few years, he decided to go into VMT education.

"I am delighted to serve the NCAVT as its president-elect," Loftis said. "I am particularly proud that, of the 11 board members, nine are Central Carolina C.C. graduates. It says a lot about the quality of the education and the graduates' desires to serve their communities and organization."

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Jean Vollrath

Jean Vollrath
Library Assistant, Chatham County Campus

In 1976, Jean Vollrath moved to North Carolina from Indiana to attend graduate school. She was advised, upon leaving Indiana, that she would love the program and hate the state. However, Jean fell in love with North Carolina.

Jean, a Staley resident, has been working for CCCC since August 2008. One of the many reasons she wanted to work for the college was because it felt so much like home. She said that working with students is the best part of her job.

"Faculty runs a close second," she said. "Librarianship is a helping profession--connecting people and information are what it's all about!"

Jean has a bachelor's degree in bacteriology from DePauw, in Greencastle, as well as a master's in environmental science and engineering. In 2000, she enrolled in CCCC's online Library Science program. In 2005, she entered the MLS program at East Carolina University and finished in May 2008. While in library school, Jean worked two years in a corporate library at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro.

In Jean's spare time she loves to weave and sew. After completing her master's degree, she opened a yarn store in Pittsboro. For 20 years, she has operated a production hand-weaving studio in Staley, which was an outgrowth of her yarn store.

Jean and her children love to travel N.C.'s back roads in search of old buildings and beautiful vistas. Her daughter will attend college next year and her son is a high school freshman. Jean said that both her children are musical, a talent they inherited from their late father.
