WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
College Powers Biofuels Workforce
"The growing biofuels industry needs the well-trained workforce that Central Carolina Community College can help provide," said Andrew McMahan, the college's Biofuels program coordinator.
Central Carolina was the first - and still is the only - community college in North Carolina to offer an Associate in Applied Science in Alternative Energy Technology: Biofuels. In the program, the dual focus is on biofuels knowledge and hands-on training with testing and production equipment. The result is workers prepared to step into the industry.
"We're positioning ourselves to stay at the forefront," McMahan said. "We're working as closely as possible with industry to stay on top of their needs and enhancing the educational experience for our biofuels students. If you want to get into this industry, Central Carolina Community College is the place to come and learn about it."
He said that with the Alternative Fuels Technology: Biofuels degree, graduates would be qualified to work as a plant technician or manager, lab technician, sales manager, or process coordinator. Graduates would also have the skills to start their own biofuels businesses.
The college's Chatham County Campus has been a biofuels education leader on the East Coast since it offered its first biofuels class in 2002. Rachel Burton, who became a co-founder of Piedmont Biofuels, Inc., in Pittsboro, brought the idea of biofuels classes to the college. The company and the biofuels program have a close partnership to encourage education in the field.
"The college's program is another way to bring more good people in that are knowledgeable," said Greg Austic, Piedmont Biofuels research coordinator. "We want people already trained to use the equipment we have."

A Message From Mary Ellen O'Shields
by Mary Ellen O'Shields, CIT Instructor
A year ago on April 1, my gastroenterologist called to tell me that the polyp removed during my colonoscopy was malignant. Yes, I had colon cancer. Fortunately, I found an excellent surgical oncologist at UNC and scheduled my surgery for later in April. Then I informed the CCCC family of my situation. I urged those who were over 50 or those with a history of colon cancer in their families to have a colonoscopy. Now, a year later, after two surgeries and a long recovery period, I appear to be cancer-free. I'd like to thank all those who sent me cards or messages on my carepage.
A colonoscopy was the first step in saving my life. I'd also like to repeat my message and ask members of my CCCC family who are over 50 to take a first step and schedule a colonoscopy today! Thank you.

Cougar Profile
Vinnie Subramaniam
Chemistry Instructor, Lee County Campus
Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Vinnie Subramaniam and his wife, Juanda, now live in Fayetteville. Vinnie received his Ph.D. in Organic and Bi-Organic chemistry from Ohio State University. Juanda was also a student at OSU, earning her Doctor of Medicine degree. The couple met at a Bible study class.
Before coming to CCCC, Vinnie was a visiting Assistant Professor at East Carolina University. He has worked for CCCC for seven months. Vinnie likes the smaller class size at the college.
"Smaller classes are allowing me to have an excellent rapport with my students and customize my teaching methods to meet student needs," he said.
When asked why he wanted to work for CCCC, Vinnie replied that it was always a dream of his to serve at a teaching-oriented institution.
"I have a strong passion for teaching chemistry," he said.
Vinnie said his family is a place where they celebrate multicultural and multiracial backgrounds, being he is from India and Juanda is African-American. Whenever Vinnie is not at work he enjoys studying the Bible, following college basketball, and playing chess. He also likes to cook - but just meals that do not take more than 30-40 minutes.
Something interesting about Vinnie - his first name, Vinodhkumar, means "he who is unique."
