Mentors Needed for New CCCC Grant Program

By Dwayne Hodges, Grants Writer

Our institution has had the good fortune of being granted a Minority Male Mentor Program grant by the North Carolina Community College System. This grant will provide us with $30,000 to invest in the creation of a support network that will assist students in persisting with their education through to graduation. More important than the money, is the understanding that both our institution and the NCCCS see the need to provide this service for our students. The only thing missing now to make this a successful venture is the human element. For that, we need you. Our program will be called the ON TRAC program. The acronym, ON TRAC underscores the concept that if the college provides full educational Opportunity and Networking between students and mentors/role models, the students will become Teachable, Respectable, Accountable, and Capable.

If you know a student that you believe can benefit from additional support, and that you believe will benefit from a formal system of support and leadership development, please fill out a referral form and return it to me. If you would like to serve as a mentor, please fill out an application form and return to me. It is not necessary to be a minority or a male to serve as a mentor. The important thing is a commitment to providing the personal support a student needs to adapt and succeed in a college environment.

Thank you in advance for your support of this program. If you have any additional questions, please contact me by email at dhodges@cccc.edu. Artical End

ACT Is More Than a College Test

by Phyllis Huff, Director of Human Resources Development

Since hundreds of companies--from small enterprises to Fortune 500's--use ACT's innovative workforce development programs, college personnel, concerned with how well students write, may want to consider what ACT® offers to those preparing to enter the workplace. ACT® has two assessments within the WorkKeys System of Assessments that relate to the college's Quality Enhancement Plan, Writing Works: Writing and Business Writing. Further information with characteristics on both assessments may be found at ACT's website, http://www.act.org/workkeys/assess/foundational.html

In addition, occupational profiles listing levels of scores (used for selection, promotion, or other individual high-stakes purposes) for various occupations may be found at the following web address: http://www.act.org/workkeys/analysis/occup.html. Artical End

Things For Sale, For Adoption or for Free

Manx Cats for Adoption: The featured adoption-ready Manx of this post is Vanna. She's a real beauty! Check out this link to find out how she got her name. http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10790484. Have you considered adopting a pet from an animal rescue? A good rescue provides you with a pet that has been vaccinated, treated for any medical problems, and "fixed". The rescue or foster home can tell you all about the pet's nature, general likes and dislikes, habits, and also any challenges. Rescue adoption is a great way to get a dog or cat that has a track record! Thanks for considering pet adoption! Get More Info. -Judy Herndon, CCCC, Pittsboro Campus. Artical End
