CCCC Students Brave Stormy Weather to Register for Spring Classes
by T. Eston (Bud) Marchant, Ed.D., President
"I would like to thank everyone for doing a great job on Registration Day. Despite the weather, large numbers of students were advised and registered. I observed many, many of you going way above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that the process was as smooth and easy for our students as possible. It was a long day. It meant so much to our returning students to be greeted with a smile and caring attitude. Many of our students are facing hard economic times and I am sure that it is of great comfort to them to know that CCCC is on their side and will work for their benefit. I appreciate all of your hard work and dedication to the success of our students."

Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs...
Thanks to all the people, too numerous to mention, who helped put up the yellow CCCC Registration signs throughout Chatham, Harnett, and Lee counties. We are asking everyone who placed signs to pick them up and return them to the Marketing Department since they will be used again in the future. If anyone sees a sign that we have missed, we would be most appreciative if you would pick it up and send it back to the Marketing Department.

"OP-TEC, the National Center for Optics and Photonics Education, continues to enjoy a productive and beneficial relationship with CCCC through the work of Gary Beasley. I am posting another Blog on our website; this one is about the success Gary has had improving the mathematics skills of his photonics students. You can review it at www.OP-TEC.blogspot.com.
We are very fortunate to have this partnership with CCCC. Through Gary, the college continues to provide vital leadership in this important aspect of technical education."
Reminder of New Website Features
As a reminder, full-time Faculty and Staff with access to the Intranet have the ability to submit "Web Events" and "Web Announcements" to the website. Both forms are accessible from the "Web" section of the Intranet.
Web Events, also known as calendar items, are most easily seen on the homepage. But, these items will be used on other places throughout the website. Events submitted with ONLY an audience of faculty, staff, or both will currently not be displayed. In the future, these items will be displayed in a section of the website more specific to faculty and staff. It is important that in the details section of every event you insert any information that will inform the audience about the event. This will help the audience know if the event is pertinent to them.
Web Announcements are another new feature. Currently, they are displayed on either the new current students page or the new future students page. These items are not necessarily calendar-based. Web Announcements will be similar to the following: "The nursing program has decided to extend its registration period" or "All returning students must sign up for a new parking sticker."
Events and Announcements can be submitted at any time, for any date, in the near or distant future. This allows for individuals to have information about your Web Event/Web Announcement in advance.
When you submit both of these item types, they will be sent to a moderation queue. Items will be processed in an orderly and timely manner, but because of this moderation period please allow time for your items to be processed. Both of these features are designed to help provide information, so please take advantage of this new opportunity.

Writing Works: CCCCis Quality Enhancement Plan
by Zena Harvley-Felder, QEP Coordinator
How does writing enhance learning? It is physical, visible, and personal. n Toby Fulwiler
In a recent meeting, the question - iWhy should students write in my class?i - resulted in some very interesting and insightful answers from instructors. Their comments are summarized below.
- Sometimes instructors divide students into groups to discuss a concept presented in class. Usually, there is a student in each group who "gets" the concept quickly and is able to explain it to the others in the group. That student "teaches" the others and in doing so reinforces his own learning. When we ask students to explain a concept in writing, they are doing the same thing - writing what they know and in the writing, reinforcing what they've learned.
- I work closely with industries, and they are using writing as part of their interview process. After they finish the interview, they hand a piece of paper to the applicant and ask them to write on a topic. If applicants can't produce a coherent piece of writing, the company will not hire them. Companies know that employees have to write reports, memos, summaries for meetings, and proposals, in addition to the many daily emails. We need to emphasize writing in all of our classes so that students will understand how people in their disciplines write and so they will be prepared to write on the job.
- I don't know what I think until I write it down and can see it in black and white. Writing helps me to understand a subject and organize my thoughts.
- If a student can write an explanation or summary, then the instructor will have real evidence that a student is learning. Writing not only helps students learn, but it also allows them to communicate what they've learned.
- If students write only in English classes, they will only learn one kind of writing. Each discipline has its own forms of writing. Students need to learn what they are and they need opportunities to practice.
