West Harnett Center Opening Ceremonies

West Harnett Center Opening Ceremonies

The ribbon cutting and open house celebrating the official opening of the new West Harnett Center, held on Sunday, November 23, marked the fulfillment of a plan that began a decade ago when Dr. Marvin Joyner, then president of CCCC, accepted a gift of 15 acres of land located just inside the projected Western Harnett Industrial Park. More than 100 people attended the opening of the brand-new 8,500 square-foot building, the college's first permanent facility in western Harnett County.

Bill Tyson, Provost for CCCC's Harnett County facilities, told us that it took a lot of teamwork to get the facility operational. He began by crediting the Maintenance Department for handling the logistics. Information Technologies did a masterly job of making sure all systems were working properly. He wanted to give a special thanks to Landis Phillips, Director of Emergency Services, for providing the loan of lobby furnishings from EMS.

The entire staff of the Center worked hard to make the official opening ceremonies a success under the direction of Polly Bouldin, Site Manager. Polly credits Starlene Jackson, Walter Cotton, Virginia Stinney, Carolyn Hatchett, Sandy Graham, every member of the maintenance staff and all of the barbering students with doing the hard work that had the Center ready for the ribbon cutting and open house. Bobby Powell, chairman of the CCCC Board of Trustees, Tim McNeil, Harnett County commissioner and CCCC Board of Trustees member, Bill Tyson and Dr. Bud Marchant, president, were among the speakers at the opening ceremony.

Dr. Marchant summed it up beautifully in his remarks at the ribbon cutting ceremony: "When I learned about the West Harnett Center, I thought the concept was sheer genius. The realization is inspiring." Artical End

Instructors Giving Multimedia Assignments to Their Students

Please call the library at (919) 718-7375 at the beginning of the semester to arrange a one-two week period during the semester for reserving a study room set up with a camcorder and DVD burner for the students use in completing recorded assignments. We have found this to be the best way to accommodate the students' needs for equipment if they do not have their own. If your students are on the Harnett or Pittsboro campuses, please call the library on that campus to make an arrangement. If the students need to submit the assignments in a particular format, such as Hi-8, Mini DV, DVD etc., please contact Renee Dusenbury at (919) 718-7435 with the campus and a date needed, if you, the faculty member, want to use campus equipment to playback and grade the assignments. Thank you for your help in serving our students. Artical End

Credit Where Credit is Due

When we wrote about the Information & Planning Conference in the last issue of "Cougar Bytes," we tried to convey just what an impressive achievement this event represents for CCCC. We inadvertently omitted the names of some of the people who worked the hardest to make the conference a success. Here are the names of the faculty and staff members who deserve the credit for the outstanding success of the 2008 IPC: Steve Athans, Lisa Chapman, Joni Pavlik, Virginia Brown, Dwane Hodges, Bobby Wicker and Martha Youngblood made up the planning committee. Recruiters Kelvin Hunt, Chris Jackson, Laurie Lympany and Ray Polak worked hard to prepare and their presence made the event a genuine triumph. Artical End

CCCC Students Make Forensic Science Elementary

Students Learning

Scott Byington, Biology Instructor at Lillington, and his Biology students recently showed third graders at the Apex Elementary School how much fun learning can be. In November, ten CCCC students from the Harnett County Biology 090 and Biology 110 classes taught lessons in forensic science at Apex Elementary School. At the invitation of teacher, Ms. Bonnie Barefoot, CCCC students taught third graders how to take and interpret fingerprints, footwear analysis, microscopic examination of soil evidence, and how to do chemical comparisons. The CCCC students found the challenge of working with 40 third-graders rewarding and enjoyable, and the students at Apex Elementary were excited about working with college students and solving crimes. PERSONNEL NOTES

News From the CCCC Family

"I am extremely grateful for the kindness shown to me and my family on the death of my beloved stepfather, Leo. The tremendous number of cards, emails and kind words is indicative of a generous, thoughtful and compassionate College. Words cannot express what this means to me. I am blessed to work here." -Charlotte Baggett

"There was a misprint in regards to my address in Cougar Bytes. The correct address is 111 Camrose Court, Raeford, NC 28376. People may receive cards back in the mail if they were sent to the address listed. Thank you." -Dr. Teronda McNeil

"The McNeil-Moore family would like to thank all of you for the wonderful cards and thank you notes that were sent. Although we are truly saddened by the death of the 'leader' in our family, we know that she is now at home with the Lord. My grandmother, Odessa McNeil-Moore, raised me from birth. So she was my mother. One good thing did occur with the coming together of my family. I found out that my grandmother was born and raised in Cameron, NC. She dropped the "L" from her name when she moved to Philadelphia. I met over 100 cousins, uncles, aunts, etc., that I did not know lived right here in this area. I plan to catch up with two of them that work at the Coty plant this week. Small, small world. Again, thank you." -Dr. Teronda McNeil Artical End
