CCCC Launches Barbering Program at Harnett Correctional Institution

CCCC Launches Barbering Program at Harnett Correctional Institution

On Tuesday, October 14th, Dr. Bud Marchant, CCCC President, and Bill Tyson, Harnett County Campus Provost, presided proudly over another CCCC pioneering event: The inauguration of the new Barbering Program for inmates at the Harnett Correctional Institution (HCI). "This is another CCCC first, " said Dr. Marchant. "There was a big turnout for the event and the enthusiasm was tangible. We are teaching practical skills that will make the difference between success and failure when our students leave here to build a new life. It's the best kind of hope."

The new program continues a longstanding collaboration between CCCC and HCI of training inmates in both academic and vocational fields of study. An existing building was demolished and completely rebuilt to the specifications of the CCCC staff and instructors. The Board of Barber Examiners licensed the barber school in August 2008 and instruction began on September 3, 2008. Daniel Thomas is CCCC Director of Correctional Education at HCI. Walter Cotton is the college's Barbering Department Chairman, and Michael Cheek is the barbering instructor at HCI.

"This is a history-making event," said Bill Tyson in his remarks. "This is barbering's time. This is a big, unique program with lots of potential. Both HCI and the college have in their mission statements that they want to take their students from where they are and move them to where they need to be through education and rehabilitation. At HCI, we've developed programs and skills that will give our students the chance to get jobs when they get out. Over the years, we've made good programs better. I expect barbering to follow the lead of the other programs here and produce graduates that want to go to work. Most importantly, we've broadened the possibilities for our students at HCI. We've given them another way to work while they're here and another way to make it when they're released."

Provost Tyson and Dr. Marchant accepted an etched plaque on behalf of the college. The plaque reads, "Presented to Central Carolina Community College in appreciation of support and dedication to Correctional Education Program, Harnett Correctional Institution, October 14, 2008." Artical End
