WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
Jessica Brown: CCCC's First Recipient of Excellence in Teaching Award
The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) announced this week that Jessica Brown, who teaches biology, anatomy, physiology, and forensic science at CCCC, has been named the winner of its R. J. Reynolds 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award. This is the first time a member of the CCCC faculty has received this honor. Jessica's colleagues foreshadowed the NCCCS award when they named her CCCC's Instructor of the Year earlier in 2008.
The process of elimination was arduous. Jessica competed against candidates from all 58 community colleges in the state. She underwent three interviews, an initial interview, another when she made it into the top ten candidates, and a final interview when she was named among the five finalists.
The award will be presented on November 21, 2008 at the NCCCS Day of Recognition in Raleigh. Jessica will receive a check for $8,000 and will bring home another $2,000 check for the CCCC Foundation. "This is a huge blessing," said Jessica, " I consider it an honor to be an ambassador for the college."
One of Jessica's students said it best: "Prepared and passionate are two adjectives that describe her. She is a phenomenal teacher and person, the ideal of what teachers should be." Our very own Jessica Brown, the best of the best.
Community Supported Agriculture
The Land Lab at CCCC's Sustainable Agriculture program supplies fresh vegetables to fortunate members of the faculty and staff year around. Robin Kohanowich, Sustainable Farming Coordinator, says that students are planting strawberries, carrots, beets, collards and broccoli now for late fall and spring harvesting. If you would like to participate in the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and get a box of fresh vegetables from the Land Lab once a week, let Robin know at kkohanowich@cccc.edu. You will be receiving the new CCCC CSA Newsletter via GroupWise at regular intervals.
100% of Nursing Graduates Pass NCLEX-RN
13 brand new nurses received their pins and Associate Degrees in Nursing on Thursday, May 9, 2008 as faculty, staff, relatives and friends watched with pride. 100% of the graduating class passed the NCLEX-RN examination on their first attempt. Rhonda Evans, Health Occupations Chair, and her faculty and staff deserve enormous credit and our heartfelt appreciation for their excellent performance in preparing these students for success as they start their professional lives.
