DUNN - Opportunity was the big winner as golfers wrapped up the third Central Carolina Community College Foundation Harnett Golf Classic March 17 at Chicora Golf Club.

A total of 88 golfers played in the Classic, combining fun with the serious goal of raising funds to assist CCCC students who need financial help to stay in college. The proceeds will be used primarily for scholarships.

Over $17,000 was raised.

"I think the tournament was a huge success," said Jonathan Hockaday, CCCC Golf Classic coordinator. "The support from the Harnett County community and businesses is what helped make this tournament what it was. We are looking forward to having this event for years to come."

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, the college. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants.

The Harnett County Golf Classic was a Four-Person Captain's Choice Flighted competition with three flights. The winners, team scores, and sponsors were:

First Flight

First Place: 56 - Steve Malone, Chris Hockaday, Fred Rambeaut, Nick Skatell.

Second Place: 56 - Neil Strickland, Ashley Strickland, Gabe Norris, Vick Medlin.

Third Place: 56 - James Harris, David Herring, Jason Bethune, Kenny Stewart.

Second Flight

First Place: 59 - David Foushee, Travis Bailey, Justin Gaines, Phil Bradley.

Second Place: 59 - Kevin Jackson, Vince Benbenek, Mike Jones, Brad Butler.

Third Place: 59 - Bud Allen, Nick Tyner, Dan Jordan, Hylton Lawrence.

Third Flight

First Place: 63 - Bob Womble, Badget Womble, George Womble, Jimmy Coleman.

Second Place: 63 - Donnie McLamb, Mick Stout, Robin Jones, John Hyland.

Third Place: 63 - Bobby Weaver, Bruce Davies, Tim Brown, Buddy Lockamy.

Closest to the pin winners were Stephen Hamby and Gabe Norris. Longest drive winner was Stephen Hamby. Phil Bradley won the putting contest.
