SANFORD — Central Carolina Community College, Chatham County and Siler City officials break ground Nov. 16 for a new era of college service to the residents of the western part of the county.
The groundbreaking takes place at 10 a.m. in the Central Carolina Business Campus in Siler City. The public is invited to attend.
Since 1984, the college’s programs in western Chatham County have been held in the old Henry B. Siler School building on Third Street in Siler City. On Monday, Nov. 16, college, county, and community leaders will take part in the groundbreaking ceremony for a new 23,800-square-foot Siler City Center. The facility is scheduled for completion in fall 2010.
Hobbs Architects designed the Center and Monteith Construction Corp. is building it. It will be constructed for energy efficiency, meeting the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification or higher.
“This groundbreaking is the beginning of a great new era for the college, residents and businesses in Siler City and western Chatham County,” said Dr. Bud Marchant, CCCC president. “We eagerly await the opening of this wonderful facility for the increased educational and workforce training opportunities it will provide.”
The Central Carolina Business Campus is located on Highway 64 West in Siler City. The Progress Boulevard entrance is east of the intersection of highways 421 and 64, near Walmart.
The new facility will be located on Progress Boulevard in the Business Campus but the groundbreaking will take place on Campus Drive. Those attending are to park at Chatham Hospital, also located in the Business Campus, and ride a Chatham Transit shuttle bus to the groundbreaking site. The hospital is providing handicapped parking for those needing it to attend the groundbreaking.
The bus will leave the hospital parking lot between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. to shuttle to the groundbreaking site. From 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., the shuttle will run to the Siler City Center’s construction site for viewing. Between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., the shuttle will return visitors to the hospital parking lot.
In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at the current Siler City Center (Henry B. Siler School), 502 W. Third St., Siler City.
