DUNN - Opportunity was the big winner as golfers wrapped up the sixth Central Carolina Community College Foundation Harnett Golf Classic March 28 at Chicora Golf Club.

The Classic combines fun with the serious goal of raising funds to assist CCCC students who need financial help to stay in college. Over $14,000 was raised. The proceeds will be used to fund scholarships.

"I think the tournament was a huge success," said Jonathan Hockaday, CCCC Golf Classic coordinator. "The support from the Harnett County community and businesses was tremendous. We are looking forward to having this event for years to come."

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, the college. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants.

The Harnett County Golf Classic was a Four-Person Captain's Choice Flighted competition with two flights. The winners, team scores, and sponsors were:

First Flight

First Place: 55 - Elmon Williams, Wayne Wood, Brad Weaver, Mike Thompson - Sponsored by Parrish Daughtry.

Second Place: 56 - Johnny Badgett, Larry Badgett, Kenneth Parker, Jeff Wilson - Sponsored by Pepsi.

Third Place: 56 - Steven Hamby, Wallace Simmons, Larry Shaver - Sponsored by John Heister Chevrolet.

Second Flight

First Place: 62 - Joe Tart, Gale Tart, Ronnie Jenkins, Darrell Smith - Sponsored by Tart Law Group.

Second Place: 62 - Hilton Lawrence, Dan Jordan, John Wiggins, Wayne Williams - Sponsored by Parrish Daughtry.

Third Place: 62 - Caroline Rary, Steve Cook, Tyler Taylor, Paul Piatkowski - Sponsored by Hayes, Williams, Turner & Daughtry, PA.

Closest to the pin winners were Wallace Simmons, Kenneth Parker, Randy Coleman, and Will Peregoy. Longest drive winner was Ronnie Brown. Wallace Simmons won the putting contest.

Parrish Daughtry was tournament chairman. Other tournament committee members were Lee Malone, Rebecca Parker, Lucia Turlington, Badgett Womble, and Tripp Womble, as well as CCCC President Dr. T. Eston Marchant.
