SANFORD – If only the buildings at Central Carolina Community College’s campuses could talk, they could share stories of 50 years of growth, of educational achievements, of students sharing the latest happenings or their hopes of success, whether on the test they just took or for their future.

The building can’t speak, but they can stir memories, so as part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Central Carolina has commissioned well-known artist Jerry Miller to create a print montage of pen-and-ink drawings of buildings from the campuses.

Included among the drawings are the first buildings constructed at each of the campuses: Main Hall, now Wilkinson Hall, which opened on the Lee County Campus in 1962; the Continuing Education Building at the Harnett County Campus, which opened in 1985; and the Administration/Classroom Building, which opened at the Chatham County Campus in 1992. The print also includes drawings of the Library, Classroom/Fitness Center, Science Building, and courtyard at the Lee Campus.

“These prints really capture the history of CCCC and its first 50 years with a glimpse of the next 50 years,” said Emily Hare, associate director of the CCCC Foundation, which is offering the print to the public.

Miller is well known for his finely detailed style of drawing and water coloring. The Sanford native, now living in Cary, attended Elon College, Mars Hill College and the North Carolina State University School of Design. He has a background in both architecture and art, and is the former president of the North Carolina Association of Home Designers and past president of the North Carolina Institute of Residential Design.

Miller has drawn a wide variety of historical buildings, landmarks, churches, schools and colleges around the state, winning numerous local and state awards. He was given the honor of painting a watercolor for President Ronald Reagan and also presented then-Vice President George H.W. Bush with a watercolor of Duke Chapel.

Among the educational institutions Miller has created drawings for are Campbell University, East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, Wake Forest University, and several of the University of North Carolina campuses.

“People like to show off their college or university,” Miller said. “I’ve found that former and current students are proud to have pictures of their college or university in their possession.”

Copies of the Central Carolina Community College multi-campus pen-and-ink print are available as 5" by 7" note cards (eight to a pack) for $10 and 8" by 10" print for $20. They will be sold through June 2012 as part of the college’s 50th anniversary celebration at each of the college’s anniversary events and by the CCCC Foundation. An 11" by 14" print is available unframed for $30 or in a 16" by 20" frame for $125. The 11" by 14" print is being sold by pre-order only until June 30.
