CCCC has another REAL good day

PITTSBORO - Central Carolina Community College has helped another group of budding entrepreneurs increase their chances of success in the business world.

Eleven students at the Chatham County Campus have completed the REAL program, (Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning). The culmination of this unique course was May 6, when they presented to the class the business plans they had developed. The plans included an online jewelry business, mobile biofuel, sustainable farms, biofuel manufacturing, clay studio and supply store, mixed media art, sculpture, grass-fed cattle farm and sustainable innovations.

“I congratulate you on what you have accomplished,” said Diane Kannarr, business and marketing instructor and REAL-certified facilitator. “Not many people take the time to write a business plan.”

The college’s REAL program is offered in partnership with REAL Enterprises, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to active learning and to developing entrepreneurs. Central Carolina offers REAL as a 16-week class to help students turn their ideas into a feasible business plan.

Students completing the REAL program in the spring semester were: Gary Allen, Shane Andrews, Jessica Cassidy, Valentine Fisher, Marshall Thorne, and Trish Welsh, all of Pittsboro; Thayer Jordan and Holly Kroetsch-Schager, both of Chapel Hill; Deborah Motter, of Sanford; Jeremy Rushlow, of Moncure; and Dustin York, of Siler City.

Guests attended the May 6 presentations were: Dr. Karen Allen, CCCC Chatham Provost; CCCC Dean Joni Pavlik; Malinda Todd, of REAL Enterprises; Robin Kohanowich, lead instructor, sustainable agriculture; Andrew McMahan, lead instructor, biofuels; Gary Kibler, Chatham Small Business Center director; and Bob Armantrout, adjunct instructor.

The REAL course is offered in Lee County in the fall semester and in Chatham County and online in the spring semester.
