Professor Shuya Che (right), Central Carolina Community College Confucius Classroom instructor, wields a shovel during the April 29 planting of an Eastern Redcedar tree by members of her Elementary Chinese-1 class. The tree planting on the college’s Lee County Campus commemorated Chinese Arbor Day-March 12, U.S. National Arbor Day-April 30, and Chinese Labor Day-May 1. Among those taking part were Jon Matthews (kneeling), the college’s dean of University Transfer, Health Sciences, and Developmental Studies; and students (back, from left) Roseanna Terry and Aleida Dominguez, both of Lee County. In addition to the tree planting, the class enjoyed listening to Che tell about the origins and meaning of Chinese Arbor Day and celebrating the birthdays of students in the class whose birthdays fall between July and December. Class members also presented Che with a vase of flowers in appreciation for her enthusiasm in teaching. Other Elementary Chinese-1 students taking part were Malcolm Murchison, Jemima Boncales, Aleida Domingoes, Denise Garcia, Paola Fernandez, David Gietzen, Roseanna Terry, Michelle Womble, Nicholas Kehagias, Daniel Buchanan, Rebecca Francis, Juanita Smith, and Tony Diaz.
