Chinese family takes home memories of N.C., America

Shuya Che (left), a professor at Nanjing Normal University, in China, and currently the instructor for Central Carolina Community College’s Confucius Classroom, in Sanford, enjoyed a month-long visit during February from her daughter Yixiao Cui (center), a student at Nanjing Foreign Language School, and husband Xiangyang Cui, a professor of economics at Nanjing University of Economics and Finance. During the visit, the family toured sites in North Carolina, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, D.C. One of the places visited in Washington was the White House (background). The family was impressed with America and Americans and said they hope more Americans will visit China and get to know the Chinese people.

While teaching at CCCC for two years, Che is living with (from left) Becky and Matt Garrett, of Sanford. The Garretts also hosted her family and showed them some of the sights in North Carolina, including the beach and the Biltmore Estate. During the visit to the United States, the family also took a tour of Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, D.C. Yixiao had the opportunity to sit in on several days of classes at Lee County High School. The family was impressed with America and Americans and said they hope more Americans will visit China and get to know the Chinese people.

The family visited Lee County High School and met Principal Greg Batten (third from right) and his daughter Taylor Batten (second from right). They presented the Battens with a bag of gifts, including Chinese tea, silk fan, Chinese knot, paper-cutting, Beijing opera mask, and a Chinese lantern. Lisa Chapman (right), the college’s vice president of Academic Affairs, accompanied the Cui family to the high school. Yixiao attended classes at the high school during February to meet American teenagers, see education in the United States and practice her English.

Che is a visiting professor from Nanjing Normal University and, for two years, the instructor for Central Carolina Community College’s Confucius Classroom, in Sanford. While visiting, Yixiao had the opportunity to sit in on classes at the high school to meet students, see education in the United States and practice her English.

Che is a visiting professor from Nanjing Normal University and, for two years, the instructor for Central Carolina Community College’s Confucius Classroom. While visiting, Yixiao had the opportunity to sit in on classes at the high school to meet students, see education in the United States and practice her English.
