Jeff Jennings (left), program officer of the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, visits Central Carolina Community College’s sustainable vegetable production class at the college’s West Harnett Center to see how its garden is growing. The trust fund awarded the college a $40,000 Project Skill-UP grant to fund the class, which is new to the Center. The class is a pilot program to train farmers in the skills to transition from tobacco-based farming to sustainable agriculture. It is also open to community members interested in organic gardening. Sampling the ripening Cherokee Princess tomatoes with Jennings are (from second left) Rob VanderVoort, class instructor, college President Bud Marchant, and Stelfanie Williams, the college’s vice president of Economic and Community Development. For information on the class, call (910) 498-1210. For more information on the college’s sustainable agriculture program, go to its web site, www.cccc.edu/sustainableag.
