Central Carolina Community College’s spring semester curriculum enrollment has hit an all-time high of 4,645 students. The previous record was spring 2007, with 4,474 enrolled. The college attributes the increase in large part to the recession. Workers who have been laid off, as well as those hoping to stay employed by learning new job skills, are enrolling in increasing numbers. Also, students who might have gone directly to a four-year institution are now taking advantage of Central Carolina’s convenience and quality to get their first two years of college at a fraction of the cost. Among the workers who have lost their jobs and come to Central Carolina for training for a new career are (front to back) Anthony Webb and Heike Christian, both of Sanford, and Tom Ujfalusy, of Southern Pines. They are testing a universal breadboard circuit board in their digital electronics class. Each is working toward an Associate in Applied Science degree in Electronics Engineering Technology.
